The Garden of the 21 Century

Schwerin, Monday 29 June 2009

I had a week off from work and used the wonderful summer weather for several day trips to the neighbouring federal states. On this Monday I went to Schwerin, the capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which boasted this year's Bundesgartenschau (Federal Garden Show) in the centre of the town, which is the Castle Park premises and the surrounding areas. I arrived in the middle of the noon heat, people licking ice-cream and stroling along the flower patches, chatting, putting their noses into the buds or simply relaxing in one of the many deck chairs placed on the lawns. The area was huge. It took me till 7 pm to see all of it without taking much time to sit down, but taking a lot of time to dwell on the beautiful flora,  enjoying the fragrances and taking hundreds of photos.

As a result I will do a couple of tabblos on the different garden themes of the Bundesgartenschau. This one is about the "Garden of the 21st Century". Be welcome and walk with me.

Schwerin has a lovely Old Town, which invites people for a stroll throught the streets. Lots of the buildings are used by the government now, but there are restaurants here and there asking you to sit down, smaller shops to go press your nose against the window. However, when going through these roads on a weekend evening they appear a bit too quiet and lifeless. Well, it's nothing to wonder about. Being surrounded by seven lakes many people dwell outdoors, walking, cycling or paddling.

Entering the "Garden of the 21st Century" my first spotting was not some enticing plant but a couple of breeding great crested grebes in the ditch.

The "Garden of the 21st Century" was an arrangement of flowerbeds, which were held in a certain shade of colour surrounded by shattered glass. Barefoot walkers might have second thoughts about walking on glass, but it might be a decorative way to keep thiefs away from your house.

The insects were appreciating the garden show as much as the human visitors.

Dominating the scenery: Schwerin castle, seat of the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. In its current state it was built in 1857 by the order of grand duke Friedrich Franz II. It was reinaugurated on the 35th birthday of his wife Auguste.

Apart from the parliament it contains a really interesting museum, which I visited first November in 1989 in my last year of school and the last year of the GDR. Just a month before the change of the German world started in Prague and Leipzig. On the last day of our study trip (which was already planned a year before, when nobody even imagined, what would happen) our bus driver offered us to do an extra tour to Berlin, for there were rumours, that the Brandenburger Tor might be opened that day. I wasn't, but it was such an exciting feeling to get there. When he was stopped by the GDR police for driving too fast on the transit road back to Hamburg, the whole bus of pupils collected the money to pay his ticket.

A last glance at the "Garden of the 21st Century" and the skyline of Schwerin, before I pass through the gateway into the castle garden.

Lovely shots and great writing, which make this another wonderful Tabblo prepared by Anke! The sequence that shows the grebes, the growing up of a flower, the several greens and colors shown in each of the gardens, and the castle, all of them are great great shots! Anke, last, but not least, I loved what you wrote here:

"When he was stopped by the GDR police for driving too fast on the transit road back to Hamburg, the whole bus of pupils collected the money to pay his ticket."

With this, I finish my comment. But I will be back to see again all these beautiful gardens.

Thank you!

Anke--I've completely enjoyed this tour. I've never seen anything like this--the crushed glass in the garden. An unusual concept. Enjoyed your photos and narrative.

Thank you Enaldo and Bob, By the end of my walk through these gardens (it were seven) you will probably get tired of flowers, but I simply bathed in there beauty with my camera.

Debbie, I agree with you about picture no. 3. When I first saw this apparition, I was quite irritated with it, for you have to imagine this thing in a huge traditional castle park with lots of ancient shady trees, whrought-iron bridges and well manicured lawns. But standing in the right angle to this gate, the the stark arrangement and the effect of three-dimensionality was just great.

By the way, I would love to know the names of the flowers, too - and I dare say, Fabio is also longing for this information. As I have only books on wildflowers, maybe the professional gardeners of the community could provide some of the names, and I will add them to the captions.

Fabio, Thanks so much. You know, I had a bit of bad conscience that this time I couldn't give you all the names of the flora ;-) So I wondered how I could compensate that. And when I added the castle - Ooops, there popped up this memory. Your comments are always inspiring me to think things over while working on a tabblo.

Linda, Thanks for joining me on my walk. I hope you will follow me on the further tour. You have to imagine: 7 hours of garden strolling!

A beautiful set, Anke. I especially like the shots of the Grebe.

Schwerin looks like a very beautiful town. Anke, what a joy this is! A carpet of colour and the individual flowers are beautiful. Your shots of the Great-crested Grebe are wonderful! Your narrative always adds that extra special component to your Tabblos as you take us with you on your journeys.
I am glad to see that you are enjoying some relaxation after your exams and are able to revisit your photographs to make some beautiful Tabblos! I look forward to more of the gardens!

Thanks Mike and David! I share your opinion. I love the grebes too. I felt quite lucky to get so close to them. Usually you only see them from a distance on the open water of a lake or river. And usually just diving away, when you finally zoomed them in.

Celia, merci beaucoup. I will try to meet your expactations. Though the next one got a bit too lenghty in the end according to my own feeling, but I haven't come up with a solution yet. The brain's not working properly at midnight. Suggestions of improvement for "Castle Garden" are welcome.

Neusinha and Pamela, Thank you so much for your kind comments. Have a lovely day on the other side of the Atlantic.

Du schreibst immer so nette Sätze ;-)

Ich hoffe Ihr beiden meldet Euch, wenn Ihr Euch nach Hamburg verirrt. Würde mich wirklich freuen Euch mal zu treffen.
