2009 Nepal - Temple of the Living Goddess

This is a temple in Bhaktapur where a very young girl is worshipped as a living goddess.    The girl stays in almost complete isolation at the temple, and she will be allowed to return to her family only at the onset of menstruation.

One of the beliefs is that this goddess is the reincarnation of goddess Taleju.

The search for the goddess considers candidates' horoscopes.  The girl must have perfect hair, eyes, teeth and skin with no scars, and should not be afraid of the dark.

The girl also must spend a night alone in a room among the heads of ritually slaughtered goats and buffaloes without showing fear.

The current goddess was appointed as a 3-year-old in October 2008.   Though we were allowed to see the current reigning goddess, we were not permitted to take a picture of her.   To see one of the goddesses, go here:   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kumari_(children).

The palace where the girl lives is named Kumari Ghar.
