Utah Fall Color Trip - 2009

We spent the last of September and the first of October travelling and camping in southern Utah, in search of fall colors.

Our first Rocky Mountain Maples, seen south-east of Tooele in the Oquirrh Mountains(what great names!).

This view is looking west down Middle Canyon.

More maples, near Sundance resort on Utah route 92.  This spectacular drive through the Wasatch Range afforded many, many fabulous views.. though we were a bit early for the peak if the color.

After a couple of days in central Utah, we started south on the "Skyline Trail".  This is a series of forest roads that run down the "spine" of Utah, traversing the Manti-LaSal, Fishlake, and Dixie National Forests.  Some paved, some rough unimproved dirt, but mostly good gravel, it makes a great trip.

We spent several days admiring the view, frequently at an altitude of 9,000 feet and more.  The weather was great.  We had lots of frost overnight and frequently hard-frozen water.  We were glad to be in warm sleeping bags at night.

Spectacular aspens, near Fish Lake, north of Loa.

Camping in aspens on the Aquarius plateau, near the end of the Skyline Trail.

(Below) East of Cedar City in Dixie National Forest, near Cedar Breaks National Monument.

The stars seemed aligned for this trip.. we hit the aspens in southern Utah just right (first week if October).  It never rained on us in a month of camping, though we did have to deal with some high winds and blowing dust a few days.

Can't wait to do this again!
