Riga - the capital of Latvia - became one of the major centres of industry, trade and culture on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea in the beginning of 19th century.
A lot of new building were erected in Neoclassical style and Jugend style. |

The "Historic Centre of Riga" was added to Unesco's World Heritage List in 1997.
According to Unesco it is generally recognized that Riga has the finest collection of Art Nouveau buildings in Europe. More than one third of all buildings there is of Art Nouveau style but you'll find the most well restored houses on Alberta, Strelnêiku and Elizabetes iela. |

The style there was inspired by German, Austrian and Finnish architecture with roots in local cultural traditions. Mihail Eizenstein was an important architect among others. |
