Dear NANCY, CLAUDIO, JEFF, SHIRL, RETA, LAURA, MONICA and CRUISING: this photo is really awesome, that's why I chose it. Hope someone will take care of us during this year (and the next ones!) just like Christ the Redeemer seems to be taking care of Rio in this photo. I planned to use one of my photos for this "card" but gave up when a friend sent me this one. It was taken from a helicopter - which means that it would have never been taken by me!

Spectacular image. I'm wondering how this was done. The images I've seen of the statue have nothing above. Is this a likeness? *** *** Happy New Year to you too Eduardo. You are a driving force here inspiring many people to produce their own beautiful images. Thanks for your efforts. Oh, and your new icon is great too.

Still Catching my breath from this Stellar Tabblo! I thought you must have photshopped it until I read your comment. Gotta love the helicopter shot. In the movies, they call that "The Money Shot" So perfect! I love your message and agree with all above comments. 2007 is already a great year! Obrigada!
LatentE said at 1:34 p.m. on Jan 4, 2007:
Oops! I missed the helicopter explanation. I didn't think of that because the image is probably a very long exposure and keeping the camera stationary from a helicopter didn't seem likely. Maybe it's one of those sophisticated stabilizers? The statue is also lit from above with no falloff in light level that a camera based flash would probably generate. There are also the seam lines in the statue. But then I know nothing about the statue and it could be made up of sections held together.

What an amazing picture this is. A wonderful way to say Happy New Year to all of us. Eduardo, I also wish you the best of everything in 2007!

Sorry for my delay, dear KELLY, DEE, LATENTE, PAM, HETTY, ANJA, WHYA, SCHARN, CANDICE & NINA. It's wonderful to start a new year with so many friends around.
Eduardo.affonso said at 3:26 p.m. on Jan 4, 2007:
LATENTE: I have a new theory for this pic: it was probably taken from a zeppelin. These airships were popular in Rio until a few years ago, and used for promotional purposes only. I've seen a set of fascinating photos taken from them. The statue of the Christ (we also call it "the Redeemer") is really made of several parts but what you take as seam lines are actually lightning rod wires.
Paolo said at 3:35 p.m. on Jan 4, 2007:
Happy new year, Eduardo :)

A few months ago I found a flash based interface to Google and other satellite views of the world and I did a world tour from the keyboard. Monumento Cristo Redentor was one of my sites to see.

You can look up and down in the VR images. I hadn't noticed that in the Corcovado VR there's a link to the maker's site with more images of Brazil. *** *** http://www.rio360.com.br/main.html

What a wonderful view over Rio. Not a shot that most of us would have the opportunity to take since it was from a helicopter, but amazing nevertheless.
Happy New Year to All
and thanks to LatentE for the fabulous links to the panoramic shots.

Thanks for sharing, this is such an incredible photo, I love it!
Eduardo.affonso said at 6:02 a.m. on Jan 8, 2007:
Thanks, WOODY, JASON, DVP, JOAN (welcome to my tabblos!) and FRANK (welcome, too!). I think this photo must have been taken from an airship (a zeppelin), as I told Latente some comments ago. This is really an unusual point of view, and show how the Christ sees Rio, instead of the ordinary photos of how Rio sees the Christ (we say "the Christ", not just "Christ", when we are referring to the statue, not to the "person"...).
Jillcdunn said at 6:45 p.m. on Jan 8, 2007:
Who could ask for better wishes for a happy new year? I hope yours is everything you want it to be (and I really do love the picture as well--thanks for sharing it).
