Nicely done. I like your colors you chose to put in the pictures.
Paul said at 5:01 a.m. on Jan 5, 2007:
Thanks, Paula. Actually, the colors are from the original pictures, which are not b/w, so my job was much simpler :)

very nice, but if you took these pictures where I am you'd have had to add the color, it is so very gray here, snow would be a relief. Oh winter is just so gray, and five days of drippy are too much! Good thing I have tabblos to look at, there are colors in the world.

Interesting!

Great use of the effect. I love the shot of the four girls playing. It really gives a feeling of how children, through play, are able to put themselves outside of the existing circumstances.

interesting idea that is well done. jh

Thank you, all.
LatentE, ingenious point of view. It really looks the way you pointed out.
Reta, the technique is very simple. Select the region you want to remain colored, invert the selection, then add an adjustment hue/saturation layer and move the saturation slider to the left. Depending on the picture, I sometime leave the saturation to -96% for a touch of color :) or modify the brightness. Additionally, I modify the color levels on the first selection.

Nice job Paul! I also like the four girls the best. I hope Reta understood what you said ( of course, from the looks of her work, she has been at this longer than me) but what you answered back may as well have been Greek! I'll just have to get out my book, because I really like that look. Some of the photos look like they could have been taken in Europe, were they? Just wondering?
Paul said at 4:13 a.m. on Jan 15, 2007:
MistyGirl, Reta is a master of photo manipulation, so I won't be too worried :)
All the photos are taken in Europe: the one with the girls was taken in Versailles, the last 2 are from Bruxelles, the one with the sphere is from Paris and rest of the images are from Romania.

Very interesting effect. Of course it reminds me of that sad scene on "The Schindler's list" - a girl with red coat that will never leave my mind. Have to learn how to do things like this...

easiest way for this effect: duplicate layer, convert to BW (decompose and choose green channel for a fast way lots better than Convert to Grayscale :), add a layer mask (transparent), using a black brush paint on the mask the parts that u want to show color... I'm using Gimp (doing most of my editing at work :), so I hope is easy to follow for PS fans outhere

Very nice effect. Tank you for sharing your work and your technic with us.

I like the effect of just leaving spot colour in certain photographs, and have used it once or twice myself. I can't remember how I did it, probably used the magnetic selection tool to cut around the object and make a layer from it, then de-saturate the background layer and then flatten image. I think the inversion is easier though, must try that. Thanks for the explanation.
