Saturday morning in Detmold is apparently Market Day, and I've got to say that Detmold has an awesome market. Not only was there a huge range of stuff (fruits, vegetables, flowers, meats, cheeses, crafts, antiques, books, etc.), but it extended for blocks and blocks. It was fun, and there were a lot of people there, enjoying a beautiful morning. |

Is it wrong of me that I'm so amused by the name of the butcher shop in Detmold? You can see their cart at the market in the picture shown above: "Kruel Meats". Okay, I realize that "Kruel" is almost certainly the last name of the butcher, but somehow this just seems like something PETA would do! |

The light was really bad on Saturday morning, so none of these pictures really do justice to how incredibly cute Detmold was. It is a strange combination of architectural styles, and it was all really well-maintained. Very sweet. |

There is a palace in Detmold, but I didn't take the tour, as I had a lot to do on Saturday. The palace has an actual moat, which I have to admit I haven't seen very often in the standard tours of palaces and castles in Europe. |

I love mills--both the water kind and the wind kind. (I was pretty excited when my hotel in Luxembourg was a former water mill, for example.) So I was pretty impressed by this old mill in Detmold. The building itself is astonishingly ornamented for something so functional as a mill. There is a long inscription along the boards--you can see some of the words in a few of the pictures. Anyway, it's a prayer; I saw this a lot in Detmold.
Today this old mill is a Tapas Bar. |
