The Orton Effect

 

I came across another neat web site the other day.

It demonstrates the Orton Effect. It's named after Micheal Orton a Canadian Photographer.  What he did was sandwich two images, one in focus the other out of focus.  Originally it was done using slide film. This site shows how you can get the same effect using a single image in Photo Shop. I've given you a couple of examples that I've done with my photos.

i've been using this technique in photoshop but i never knew it was called the orton effect :) i love it. makes images softer and kind of ethereal! :)

I think most people know of this effect as Soft Focus. Available for sale from most camera accessories dealers. Us cheapskates just cover the lens with mesh of some kind. Nylon stockings were popular in the past.

This effect is different than the soft focus effect you are talking about Flash. They do both use gausisan blur but that's where the similarity ends.

My favorite way to do this is actually IN CAMERA as much as possible. Stop down both the photos to prevent overexposure, deliberately soft focus and combine in Photoshop without using any extra Gaussian blur. You can also get interesting effects by overexposing deliberately too.

I've used the technique using Digital Image Suite as well as Photoshop. It works quite well. An example can be seen my Tabblo Dark Side of the Moon. (the pic of the woman)

Nice one. Hmmm, I don't have Photoshop, is it really overrated? Like the effects of the two you have. Thanks for the tips.
