Windmills at Kinderdijk (the Netherlands)

The nineteen windmills at Kinderdijk are a symbol of the way the Netherlands manages its water. For a long period of time they kept the land dry as it was plagued by subsidence and flooding: the Alblasserwaard, once a rough, wet area of peat, was eventually colonised and reclaimed by men.

Walking along the water and through the polder, you can imagine what took place here during the long struggle against the water. The low and high drainage pool, the many windmills and a visit to a mill… A long walk or a short walk to the mills of the Nederwaard and the Overwaard.

Windmills are indeed typical for the Netherlands but I wasn’t aware that there was a place where there are so many all together. I think about to visit them one of these weeks. Thanks and by the way ….. nice pics.
