documentary

after buying and setting up my new camera, i announced that i was going to go into the world to see what i could capture.

it turned out to be an extremely interesting day.

a couple of train rides.

several bus rides.

a few encounters.

and lots and lots

to document...

some interesting faces on the bus.  the #47 from Broadway to Central.

I got off at Dudley.

the bike was standing outside of this convenience store. it looked cool.

very shiny. so i took a photo. the owner walked out and said "i have all copyright rights to that photo."

and so i apolgized and asked him if it was okay.

he laughed.

he thought it was intetesting that someone was taking pictures just for the sake of taking picutres. and he asked me if i wanted to take a picture of him with the bike.

and so i did.

the bike is important to this gentleman.

i think the photo made him happy.

these are from the

Tropical Food store in Dudley Sq.

it has the most colorful mural on the outside. I had always wanted to go in.

 so I finally did.

as i was taking the photo of the hanging peanuts, a store manager approached me and proceded to ask why i was taking pictures. I told him simply and honestly that I just was, because it's what I do. he didn't believe me and kept asking me over and over again why I was there. I was in line, buying a drink, so I couldn't just leave. I finally told him I was taking a photo class. he still didn't believe me.

he told me to leave.

at Andrew Sq. station, this 9th grader asked me if the U.S. had faught World War II against Japan or China. so we chatted about U.S. history for a minute.

he then asked me if I was a photographer.

I said I simply like to go around and take pictures. he let me take his. he then asked me if people find it weird that i "just go around taking pictures?"

I told him that yes, I'm sure they do.

I decided not to ask him if he thought that people

might find it weird that he asks strangers about the details of WW II.

i did a lot of walking and seeing and for some reason noticed all of the pay phones. and then started thinking about pay phones. and then i realized i could not remember the last time i had used a pay phone.

and it made me kind of sad...

Of all your Tabblos, this is one my favorites. Most days, I just don't feel comfortable of taking pictures on a bus, or in a store - for exactly the reason you ran into (with the peanut man). I don't care for confrontation etc... I typically shoot with a larger SLR (nikon) which makes it stand out even more.

By the way - congrats on the new camera. What type did you get?

loved the observation by the 9th grader and a great open inquisitive mind....both of you.

Wonderful window on a time and place. I enjoyed your words and photos. They're an interesting exploration of the invasive nature of photography and how this can lead to communication and connection.

i love this type of photography..I keep a copy of a "permission to photograph" in my camera bag. i learned this from some film school students...I explain that as long as my photos are not being used for advertising then I have the right to take them. If they resist me further I just smile and leave. They usually feel stupid by then. As My grandma always used to say "kill them with Kindness" :-)

I love the stories that go along with these pictures. The kid asking about WWII especially. Thanks for commenting on my tabblo. -N
