12 Miles West

These photos are from my photo exhibition, "12 Miles West", which was at the Lincoln, Massachusetts Public Library (photo to the right) in August of 2005. These photos feature locations that tend to be further away from public transit. I wanted to show people how beautiful it is here just a short trip west of Boston near the small towns of Waltham / Lincoln / Concord and their environs. Living in the big city, people often forget the quiet rural nature that is waiting for them to explore and enjoy just a few miles away.

Photo information:

All photos were shot with a 3.34mp Nikon Coolpix 995 modified internally to capture only near-Infrared light. The RGB glass that filters away IR light was removed and replaced with a regular piece of glass covered with a Wratten IR filter and placed back over the sensor. This allows the Coolpix camera to show you a preview of your shot on the LCD screen with only about a 5-stop loss of light.

These are very nice, with good highlight detail (considering the small format camera). How large were the prints?
Engelgrafik said at 1:22 p.m. on Jan 28, 2007:
Default at 300 dpi is about 5x7. I can usually print bigger but not more than 8x10 without losing resolution... have to interpolate to get them that big. 11x14 is the absolute max I think. I have blown up to 11x14 by doing some interpolation processes but you can see it when you look up close.

These are ouststanding. There are many that I found particularly beautiful including the first and second. Great work!

Wow, really spectacular! Love the infrared also.
JeffS said at 1:43 p.m. on Jan 28, 2007:
Awesome job. I bet the prints look great. The IR effect makes the images appear to be very dramatic and from places a lot further than 12 miles away!

I love these infrared images - they're really beautiful. Who knew they could come form a little coolpix camera?

Hi Jeff! I love the intensity of the clouds in the sky in these infrared images, and the foliage glows, too!
Banafsheh said at 2:09 p.m. on Jan 28, 2007:
you how I feel about these images. I have curated them over and over and frankly if anyone has given you anything less than incredible then they have to put their camera down and get a *****! lolol....

These are your best!

Beautiful!
Dunster said at 2:43 p.m. on Jan 28, 2007:
The third one is my favorite. I stare at it, and it's no longer a treeline on pond. It's a roaring fire, racing in from the horizon.

You are so good!!!!!!! Wonderful images:)

JEFF This is absolutely G O R G E O U S ! I wish I could have seen your show in person. The infra red is just the right touch..not over done. I can't pick a fave. What focal length was the last (church) shot? Congradulations on your show. Hope you have another one planned soon!
Floridamolle said at 3:27 p.m. on Jan 28, 2007:
GREAT Pics, would have been in color or B/W too, but the IR was a great choise. WONDERFUL!!
HunterProductions said at 4:31 p.m. on Jan 28, 2007:
Banafsheh not sure if this is the best one but it is close that is for sure but it is hard to top Jeffs Valley of Fires shots, those shots are amazing and these are too but I dont know if I could choose this one over Valley of Fires. Jeff fantastic job on these and congrats on getting to display them at an exhibition. The ifra-red really adds appeal to the images that is for sure.

ECCEZIONALE SUPER TABBLO ENGEL. Un lavoro di qualità superiore ben impaginato per tabblo. Ciao
Engelgrafik said at 5:26 p.m. on Jan 28, 2007:
PKEENER, with the 35mm-equivelant conversion (this is an old camera with tiny chip!) and wide angle adapter multiplier, the focal length of the lens was probably around 20mm, which is somewhat more than average wide angle on a 35mm film camera.

Thank-you so much everybody for all the nice comments!

Engelgrafik said at 7:56 a.m. on Jan 29, 2007:
CHEMPILOT, i don't do sepia, when I pull into Photoshop, I correct black/white balance in Curves and then I convert to a Duotone, a traditional graphic arts process where the entire range is shared only by two colors. It is a more controlled way of sepiatoning and isn't as harsh. I like my black and white images to not be perfectly black and white, with just a little warmth to them. If I print them, I ususally do straight up black and white and make sure the printer goes with a warm gamut.
Hollyridger said at 3:22 p.m. on Jan 29, 2007:
Awesome work! Thanks, Jeff and thanks in particular for the info on how you like to manipulate these wonderful black and white images. It is so helpful for relative beginners like me to see work like this.

Hey EDUARDO, unfortunately I don't have pictures with the natural colors. The camera only shoots Infrared. This is what I get (well, they come in pink and white, and then I correct the color to black and white). But I could go back and take pictures of those locations. Hmmm.... there's an idea to add to my list of 10000 ideas... ;)
