meet the new coat, same as the old coat

I've been wearing the same old coat for at least 10 years.  I think it originally belonged to my grandfather, and my sister wore it during her brief grungy stage before handing it down to me.

Through the years, other winter coats have come and gone, but this one has stayed with me because it's practical, not too bulky, and durable.  Although it's not very well insulated, it gets the job done.  It has been with me for below-freezing automotive repairs and oil changes, playing in snow (and later, shoveling snow), and sleeping in my car.

Recently, I've had to come to terms with my coat's mortality.  As it has become more threadbare and stained, even I have to consider the alternative – a new coat.

Yesterday, I set out to find something totally different and befitting of my character...

I put on my only pair of shoes, which have held up surprisingly well.  Unfortunately, they may be the next victims of nature that will force me to search for another pair.

Harvard Square turned up nothing, and Goodwill in Central Square had only coats for large people.  I trekked to the Garment District in Kendall Square.  Surely they'd have something old and practical.

After trying several "vintage" overcoats, I felt embarrassed that everything seemed too big for me.  When I tried on a very comfortable wool coat and asked for an employee's opinion, she said, "Uhh, yeah.  That's too big."  I must've blushed because she tried to console me by assuring me that she, too, had trouble finding a small enough coat for herself.  Great.

There are no pictures of the stressful and embarrassing process of shopping – it was awkward enough without the camera...

I briefly considered getting a needle and thread to stitch up the old coat, but I decided to make a stop at Army Barracks on Newbury Street.

I was reluctant to get another surplus coat because I'd rather not be associated with the military (whether accidentally or not), but in the end I bought a brand new "M-65 Men's Field Coat", but in black and without an Army label.  It's interesting that the design has barely changed in 50 years, except for the gold colored buttons and zippers and slightly different liner.  The size small seems to be larger than my old coat, perhaps representative of the super-sizing of our society.

I also note that this one was made in China...

I tested the new coat by walking home across the windy Mass Ave. bridge and the tundra of Cambridge.

Yup, it's just about the same as the old coat:  not the warmest, but good enough for me.

Goodness, this is quite emotional! What happened to "old coat" - hopefully recycled and not abandoned? Perhaps next month's shopping might include a new or nearly new pair of socks to go with the spiffy new jacket! Very well done tabblo, Dcs - I love it...

I used to have one of those coats from my Dad as well, Vietnam era. They are indeed comfortable and the older they are the more soft they are. I remember some army shorts my Dad had that I used to love wearing. Nice and cool for summer days and really comfy! Something changed with military clothes after the '70s though. They changed to these space-ace industrial designs and stuff and got itchy with all the straps and banding and whatever. Maybe it wasn't 100% cotton anymore either. I dunno, but I can't stand wearing the stuff that is at the Army/Navy stores. It's all that modern crap.

I've noticed a few folks wear the Bundeswehr coats as well. That's the German Army's jacket. You've seen 'em, they're the coats with the little black, red and yellow flag on the shoulder. Eddier Vedder made them famous. ;) They're super comfy, based closely on the US coats. I had one when I was a kid in the '70s and '80s. Hey, does that make me cooler than Eddie Vedder? Oh wait a minute... Eddie Vedder WAS cool like 10 years ago. And I was NEVER cool. Coat I'm talking about : http://www.pgwing.i12.com/prods/p4-1a.JPG

Yes, the material on this new coat is more stiff than the old one. I may have to run it over with my car a few times to tenderize it.

The German and Swiss coats seemed decent and comfortable, but I don't think I saw one my size. Maybe in 10 years when I'll need to shop for one again...

We all seem to have had a version of your old green army coat -- mine was a pullover and had a hood with some "fur" trim on it from Jerry's Army & Navy Store in Salem MA, circa 1960. Best coat ever.

I had a pair of kickers "our European brothers and sisters would know what I'm talking about" that my daddy bought me when I was 15 . I wore them all the way from the age of 15 in Iran ,my 4 years in Switzerland and finally my first year in college ,so all together 9. I use to have a cool Mohawk ,shaved my eyebrow Boy George style ( he was cool in my time) also a very large and very ugly and very warm coat....I wore that one for 7 years....

then I dropped them all and now I only have pictures of them and also a very long long time ago I decided not to get attached to anything tangible....
Plus with the salary you get @ tabblo ,I'm sure you can afford a really cool coat....even if you prefer to keep "what it is called ..your Grungy style"!lol..Enjoy it and wear it in great health..even if it is made in China! We are all made in china these days..

Cute as usual..and some really nice shots.

I love that other people wear things to exhaustion. I have a pair of jeans that I'm happily embarrased about owning for more than one decade. They don't make it out of the house much, but they're still serviceable. Great story.
