Foundry in Central Massachusetts II

More color digital photos from the central Massachusetts foundry are here.

These were shot with a Kiev 60 medium format camera and Volna f2.8 80mm lens, on Ilford Delta 3200 film.

The Kiev 60 is a Ukrainian camera made in the "Arsenal" plant which used to also manufacture weapons for the Soviet Union. These cameras are iffy, quirky knock-offs of the East German Pentacon Six (which, in turn, is probably a knock-off of the western Pentax 67). However, their lenses are pretty good copies of East German Zeiss lenses. You can also buy the actual Zeiss lenses for them, but they are a bit more expensive, but still nothing compared to if you were shooting Mamiya, Hasselblad or another western-made camera. For less than $200, you can get into medium format, with ground-glass focusing, and a couple near-Zeiss quality lenses, if you're willing to put up with some of the quirks. Of course, Mamiya, Hasselblad and Pentax don't want you to know that. ;)

Some eerie stuff here. Well done. And hey, as far as getting into a decent medium format for under 200, don't forget my personal favorite, the Yashica-Mat!

Very nice...these type of locations deserve this b&w moody feel. Thanks for always posting your cameras/lenses, too. I learn something new everytime!

these are great b/w set... :)

Wow JEFF I see how you are playing with depth of field and it really makes an impact. The shots are so fine. I really appreciate your info, too. I used to have a Mamiya RB 67 and I really miss the larger format .

Jeff...I like the one in the middle with the knocked over stool best. The one on top with the out of focus file cabinet makes me a bit woozy! Overall, these work well as a set, esp. in B/W.

stunning, you have caught the desolation of the place so well.

going russian now? is this 6x6 or 6x4.5? the third pic is my favorite because of the lighting and mood...and i like the unconventional off-center DOF of the last one.....

A wonderful B/W set. And thanks for the information, very interesting

good continuation of the subject. ?dof in the first - your's or the camera's? jh
Engelgrafik said at 3:42 p.m. on Feb 15, 2007:
JACKHOLMES, no Photoshop here. :) It's all lens, baby! The Volna 80mm is the standard lens that comes with the Kiev 60 and these shots were opened up all the way to f2.8 where the DOF is super super shallow and everything beyond focus gets really funky quickly.

CHEMPILOT, the Kievs are all 6x6cm frames but KievUSA will modify your camera to shoot 6x4.5. However, it will be portrait and if you ever want to shoot landscape, you will have to always turn your camera sideways. I think that's annoying. Again, this is why many just get a $1000 Mamiya with the rotating back. So you have to decide if it's worth $1000 for all the extra functions of a Mamiya or Hasselblad.

Beautiful set. Thank you for the information on your camera. Very interesting. Best regards - Roy.

The soft look and minimal depth of field work well with these. I especially like the highlights in the windows on the second picture -- digital can't touch that smooth highlight detail.

I have a FED 5 rangefinder, one of the Ukrainian Leica knock-offs. It's kind of neat and novel, with an interesting story behind its manufacture, but it doesn't have much character. It's very utilitarian and brick-like. Is the Kiev similar?

Creepy shots! Interesting info about the camera and the shots - thanks!

DCS, yeah the Kiev 60 (and older 6C) are weapons. All metal, very clunky, but somehow it seems to fit in your hands well after a short amount of time. Imagine an old 35mm Rangefinder on steroids and about 1.5X bigger. Isn't the Fed 5 a 35mm camera? Yeah, imagine the same thing, but bigger. Here's what mine looks like, and it's the same lens, the Volna 80mm. http://www.kefk.net/Fotografie/Kameras/Mittelformat/Anbieter/Kiev/60/k60f.jpg

Wonderful stuff here, I like how you use the out of depth on some shots.
Finding and exploring forgotten places like these are becoming quite rare, thanks for sharing.

AH, HA... so you're one of those people that hunt for abandoned buildings/factories etc. in search of unique views! There have been a number of articles in PopPhoto over the past several months detailing the adventures of your cohorts. :D Beautiful work here! And you're in there shooting film to boot... well done!
