I guess I should explain where and what Lowell is: It is an old industrial city on the banks of the Merrimack River, Massachusetts, USA. It prospered in the late 1800s and declined in the 1900s with the rest of the US textile industry. It has had a bit of a renaissance in the last 25 years. It is now home to a growing state university, a national historical park, an influx of young (and not so young) urban professionals, and an eclectic mix of recent immigrants. Boston -- just 40 minutes to the south -- is a more popular tourist destination, but Lowell is a great place to visit too.
