LAND OF GIANTS

Engelgrafik said at 10:33 p.m. on Feb 18, 2007: Eduardo.. you should create a variation of Tabblo where it's only these giant characters with buildings in the background. You know why? It looks like those old Japanese TV shows for kids, like Ultraman, or Spectre Man, where they had these giants fighting in the cities.

Well, Jeff, I liked your idea, so here are some of my giants, which would never destroy Rio like Godzilla loved to do with Tokyo (would you please tell me how could Tokyo be rebuilt everyday, just to be destroyed again and again by that oversized lizard?).

Btw, I must thank Antonio (Experience) for teaching me how to creat a gigantic tabblo!

Just awesome! Great selection of photos for this.

SO COOL EDU! Is that Nefertiti in pic#3? How many months do they take to prepare these gargantuans?
Experience said at 3:55 p.m. on Feb 25, 2007:
Bellissimo, super, fantastico tabblo. Fotografie di grande effetto. Bravissimo Eduardo.
Eduardo.affonso said at 6:03 a.m. on Feb 26, 2007:
Thanks, <b>BOB, PAM & ANTONIO</B>. Yes, pics #3 and 4 portrait Nefertiti; I think it takes more thab 6 months to prepare these "giants". They tell a story (they are part of the main parade, where each group has its own theme - for example: handicraft, photography, Africa, architecture, a certain legend or heroe and so on). So each group (called "escola de samba", which means literally "school of samba") creates its song & costumes according to the theme. I joined the parade a few years ago and our theme was "The Circus", and I was dressed like a malabarist.

The images came out very well. Kudos, Eduardo.
Hyhoa said at 9:15 a.m. on Feb 26, 2007:
Wow , 6 months to prepare each one ? Artistiquement superbes, these mannequins giant heads , l love the diversity of the themas : egypt , greak( Poseidon ? ), North africa ( is that Hannibal the rival of Caesar (- not Hannibal Lechter of course , have some one seen the 2nd film ? ) central africa ,caraibes islands, péru..., beautifull colors and creativity . Are these artists well known or anomymous street artists ? These giant heads make me think of Carnival of Nice , côte d Azur , South France, starring in februar every year and also at this time .I pass the last week nearby in Provence and saw the carnival a few years ago .Nice Carnival have a Corso Carnavalesque defile too, with giant heads, but simply made and with more humorositic themas, nothing to compare to Bresilan Carnival, which is a lot more beautifull ! Can read something here, in french, http://www.nicerendezvous.com/FR/C_culture.php?p=1 , and see some photos of Nice carnival 2006 here, http://www.nicerendezvous.com/FR/actu-1270.html , ( yours is better , Eduardo ) I' ve heard about these school sambas too, perhaps can you tell or show us some photos -of you dancing the Samba Circus like a malabarist , of course ! Just kidding -

Impresionante...

Thanks, PAUL & KATHRYN.

HY HOA: The themes for this year were "Candaces - a dinasty of Queens in East Africa", "Do you want codfish?" (the history of codfish in Brazil), "Metamorphosis: the transformations of life" (including Darwin, Copernicus, Industrial Revolution, the frog that becomes a prince and so on), "Caxias: the way to progress" (Caxias is a city near Rio de Janeiro), "Africas - from the royal origin to the Brazilian court" (celebrating the heritage we received from many African nations), "The Olympic gods in the land of Carnival: a celebration of sports, healthy and beauty" (the history of sports, since Greece till the Pan American games which will be held in Rio this year), "Black and white in colors" (an homage to Nelson Mandela, against racism), "My language is my homeland" (celebrating Portuguese language, from its Latin origin to the modern writers), "Games" (chess, soccer, the game as a metaphor of life), "Handcraft: history made with our hands", "Photography", "It's normal to be different" (about discrimination, prejudice, freedom of speech, tolerance) and "Sapoti" (a Mexican fruit that became very popular in Brazil and in the rest of the world, used for chewing gum). All the photos you see in my series of tabblos are part of one of these themes (believe it or not!).

HY HOA: Thanks for the links! They show a quite different kind of Carnival. I'll consider the suggestion of posting my photos...

¿Y quién ganó...?
Eduardo.affonso said at 5:59 p.m. on Feb 26, 2007:
LILIANA: Como uma das escolas tinha por enredo o artesanato, era inevitável que houvessem carros com esses bonecos de barro, típicos do Nordeste. O contraste com as cúpulas russas me pareceu divertido...
Eduardo.affonso said at 6:13 p.m. on Feb 26, 2007:
LILIANA: Em primeiro lugar ficou a Beija-Flor (""Áfricas: do berço real à corte brasiliana" - link: http://www1.folha.uol.com.br/folha/galeria/album/p_20070220-beija_flor_01.shtml).

Great tabblo with a lot of awesome shots, marvellous how beautiful.!
Liliana said at 6:41 p.m. on Feb 26, 2007:
¡Gracias! Me encantaría verlas.
Eduardo.affonso said at 7:13 p.m. on Feb 26, 2007:
Thanks, GERARD! Hope you'll also take a look at the links I mentioned to Liliana. They do deserve a visit.
Eduardo.affonso said at 7:14 p.m. on Feb 26, 2007:
Vou postar outras fotos, mas acho que desta vez vou ficar te devendo os bois coloridos com pontinhos brancos...
Liliana said at 7:37 p.m. on Feb 26, 2007:
Todavía no pude ver esos links...
Nmat said at 11:17 p.m. on Feb 26, 2007:
This is terrific, Eduardo! Another unique and impressive tabblo full of fascinating things. But what is a malabarist? And how did you get your tabblo so wide?
Eduardo.affonso said at 7:07 a.m. on Feb 27, 2007:
LILIANA: Ainda há alguns bois (vaquinhas?) daquelas de terracota, que estão num novo tabblo ainda em gestação. Aguarde.
EMA said at 7:38 a.m. on Feb 27, 2007:
This is so gorgeous! Unfortunately this year we did not see any report about the Rio Carnival. Usually our television shows the parede all night long and this year, something happened because they didn't show it at all.
Thank you! :-)
Eduardo.affonso said at 7:39 a.m. on Feb 27, 2007:
NANCY: Thanks for your comment. "Malabarist" is the French word for juggler - and I thought it would be the same in English. I had already seen wide tabblos and was curious about that. So I asked Antonio (aka "Experience") and he gave me all the tips. Here is what he told me (and was enough for me to create this h-u-g-e tabblo): "1-Choose a format: online tabblo ----- 2-Choose photo shape and layout: square cropped: BORDERLESS 6 COL ----- 3-Chose theme: it would have to work with whichever topic". Good luck!
Liliana said at 6:28 p.m. on Feb 27, 2007:
Meu irmao, ¡¡¡¡yo también hubiera escrito "malabarist"!!!!
Eduardo.affonso said at 7:48 p.m. on Feb 27, 2007:
LILIANA: A palavra até existe em Inglês, mas não é usada. Não sei de onde vem "juggler" (de "jogo", talvez??), mas "malabarista" vem de Malabar (região da costa das Índias Ocidentais onde esses jogos de equilibrismo começaram). Daí eu ter pensado que era universal...
Liliana said at 3:34 p.m. on Feb 28, 2007:
Gracias por la etimología, no la conocía.
Finalmente, vi las fotos de las webs. ¡¡Prefiero las tuyas!! Son más personales, menos grandiosas, van a lo pequeño, subjetivo... No me queda muy claro el tema de Unidos da Tijuca (fútbol, guerras, soldados...).
Mei_shoo said at 6:34 p.m. on Feb 28, 2007:
These are gorgeous Eduardo. Great pics!

This is really cool! Great job!
Eduardo.affonso said at 5:10 p.m. on Mar 1, 2007:
LILIANA: Tem certeza que prefere as minhas fotos? Aquelas têm vida, não são esse carnaval estático de bonecos gigantes contra um céu azul que eu fotografo. Entender um enredo não é mesmo lá muito fácil. O tema da Unidos da Tijuca era a fotografia, e certamente existe uma ligação entre aquelas alegorias e o tema - mas haja subjetividade!<br/>
MEI SHOO, ANJA, NOE & JILL: Thanks & Gracias! I'm glad you enjoyed these pics. There are more, and I'll be posting them soon.
Caitbrowne said at 6:48 p.m. on Mar 1, 2007:
These floats are so very interesting. Thanks for sharing these.
Liliana said at 8:07 p.m. on Mar 1, 2007:
Bueno, si el tema es la fotografía...¡claro que puede haber relación!
No sé si son tan "vivas" las fotos, tal vez por ser muy panorámicas (muchas) o tal vez muy comerciales (no sé si es la palabra, muy trilladas). Pero son buenas como información, por supuesto.
Abking said at 11:13 p.m. on Mar 1, 2007:
These are good! You really flew with Jeff's suggestion. Thanks for the window on your world.
Siagian said at 12:28 a.m. on Mar 2, 2007:
i like how you contrasted the float heads with its surroundings to maximize the "giant" effect. great job.
