~ Winter at the harbor ~~ L'hiver au port ~

This time of year, the only sounds that can be heard are those of the gulls, ducks and ships creaking in the water!  Occasionally one may hear the horn of the ferry making its presence known.  Winter is my favorite time of year at the harbor. In a few months the marina will be bustling with people, ships and the fishermen bringing in their catch of the day!  I enjoy the peace and quiet of this season while it lasts.

GREAT Tabblo. Very creative and put together very well.

Paula, I really think this is a wonderful tabblo. I love the variety of pictures and I agree that it is put together so well. Even though winter here isn't like it is in the north, it still gets quiet around the lake this time of year. I too enjoy it so much. The summers get so hectic. The quiet of winter is a welcome relief.

Pmoodyvt said at 8:42 a.m. on Feb 24, 2007:
Wow - there are a couple really stunning shots here - the set is a great tour : ). (one advantage to flickr is it encourages comments/critique on individual photos vs. the set - tabblo encourages the latter - but since I flickr a lot, I'll do both : ). The shot of the nets - 9 out of 10 (with more post processing, a definte 10!) - the colors, framing and textures make this a great shot (I'd crop off the top, the white sky, rigging and light don't add anything - then crank the saturation, bump the red up, sharpen - and BAM, a 10 : ). The close up of the duck is very nice, love the color and sharpness - cropping feels just a tad crowded (was there more in frame?). And the one below, with the bummpers - I like the framing of that - there is a lot of interesting arc's and circles in this shot. Works even better in B&W (I tried it on a screengrab - makes the curves from different colors play off each other better - but you'll have to play with levels to resaturate the image - needs more contrast as B&W). Cheers, and thanks for sharing. Paul
Engelgrafik said at 10:17 a.m. on Feb 24, 2007:
Looks like you spent another fun yet COOOLD day shooting! I agree with Pmoodyvt, I would crank up the colors on a few of them and balance them so they're less "blue" unless you like that blue colorcast. Sometimes it works! And he's also right about sharpening... sharpening is crucial in digital photography. It's **NOT** cheating when you do that. It's not cheating because when you shrink down a large digital file to fit in Tabblo, the pixels get redrawn and they will smooth incorrectly! So sharpen your shots if you can. But don't if you don't like what it does. :)

I Love the shots. I don't live by the water but, am drawn to it I guess. What people take for everyday life is an adventure in these. Thanks for sharing.

JoanW said at 8:06 p.m. on Feb 24, 2007:
These are a wonderful bunch of photos Paula. A very worthy Tabblo. I love the variety of shots you have iincluded....from long distance shots, to close ups, from monotone colouring to finding brihgt spots of colour to show off against the grey tones. Wonderful!! The makes us feel like we have actually visited the harbour and seen all the best points of interest. I love the close ups of the hook and nets, and the gulls. Then I also like the perspective in the shot looking down a dock with the pillars each side. There is so much variety and interest here. You have taken the time and trouble to prepare your photos and to present them in an interesting way. Really well done. I am enjoying this one very much. My enthusiasm is also because I love these sort of shots, boats, water, birds. etc....and it is the sort of thing that I would plan to do if I lived in the area. .

Really enjoyed this Tabblo, Paula. Really tells a story of how quiet the off-season can be at a marina. The photos of the Mallard and the dock are especially appealing...to me anyway. Thanks for sharing. You always seem to create an atmosphere of tranquility.

good composition of the tabblo and images. i agree re: the contrast and image "massage". the photo vendors do it without your asking so the print is "nice". one needs to manage the image them self if a vendor doesn't. jh.

The great waiting - all in stillness and agony or even in peace - a big paralysis waiting for spring's kiss to be re-awakened, and - momentarily - an air of sadness over it all, of fatigue. I like your tabblo!
