Today I took my last trip on the M/V Islander. She has been ferrying people, cars, and dogs to and from Martha's Vineyard since well before I was born. I know it's "just a boat," but she has been such a constant of island life for over 56 years that she has touched the lives of many. I was not alone wandering the decks with a camera today. Other passengers were doing the same, with the same wistful look in their eyes.

I doubt it ever saw use. |

Even the crew was reverent, as this lady took us back and forth across the Sound, as flawlessly as ever, even within a week of her final voyage. We were lucky to have her carry us in both directions today, and a tear rolled down my cheeks as the rear wheels of our car rolled off the Islander and onto the dock for the last time.
