How Do You Say Goodbye to an Old Friend?

Maybe a little worse for wear.

Today I took my last trip on the M/V Islander.  She has been ferrying people, cars, and dogs to and from Martha's Vineyard since well before I was born.  I know it's "just a boat," but she has been such a constant of island life for over 56 years that she has touched the lives of many.  I was not alone wandering the decks with a camera today.  Other passengers were doing the same, with the same wistful look in their eyes.

Everyone took one of these shots today

I doubt it ever saw use.

The engine is still running strong

Even the crew was reverent, as this lady took us back and forth across the Sound, as flawlessly as ever, even within a week of her final voyage.  We were lucky to have her carry us in both directions today, and a tear rolled down my cheeks as the rear wheels of our car rolled off the Islander and onto the dock for the last time.

Well done, M/V Islander.

Nice photos - I'm pretty sure we were on that boat a couple of times going to and fro in the early 90's.
