Snowy Suburban Streets after Sunset

All the above images were taken with a fairly low resolution camera a Canon 200SD with just 3.2 Mpx.  At night with low lighting, I got very grainy pictures, and as I needed to add a little brightness, they were increasingly grainy. So as a final procedure I ran them through Neat Image which does a calculation and allows you to smooth the images.  It's useful in all instances where you have too much visible grain, and using it on these low res images it produced a kind of smooth blurry effect which I liked.

Neat Image can be downloaded free on the Internet. Just Google for Neat Image if you would like to try it out.

Hi Joan, these are really great - I, too, like the smudgy effect! The last shot is also my favourite. Thanks for the tip.

LOVE these! the third one is my favorite, maybe because it looks like a house where I grew up. I really like the softness the neat image gives. gotta try that. =)

LEARN TO LOVE THE GRAIN!!! hehehe... some of the newer cameras that are coming out actually have nice noise that actually looks more like film grain. But the older cameras had really bad noise. Even the Canons and Nikons have bad noise above 400 ISO. Which is why I loves me my Fuji S3! hehe... Nice Tabblo JoanW. I like what you did with these photos... they look really foggy which is what it looks like on some nights when it snows and then warms up quickly.

Thanks for the tip on Neat Image. I have the same problem with noise when I use my Panasonic DMC FZ5 in low light and have been looking for software that works more efficiently than Digital Image Suite for chromatic and luminant noise reduction.

Whatever the program, you put it to excellent use with these images. They look like a dream parallel to the usual suburban neighborhood.
