An evening view of a wintry downtown 1970 Montreal - from the lookout at the chalet on Mount Royal.
I remember taking a trek with tripod and full equipment pack for this photo. For some reason I got disoriented and walked through about a quarter mile of hilly four foot deep snow to get to the chalet. Once there I saw that there was a cleared road running directly to it. I don't remember how I missed the road. You can't imagine how exhausting walking through deep snow is until you have to climb and fall four feet with each step. It makes you appreciate snow shoes and the long spindly legs of a moose.

A shop in Old Montreal (Vieux-Montréal) with the dome of the Bonsecours Market (Marché Bonsecours) visible in the background. The poster in the window is of Pierre Trudeau. The words surrounding the image say "Fuddle Duddle." I don't remember any particular significance to the phrase but the period was not long after the "October crisis" of 1970 and Trudeau's "watch me" War Measures Act invocation of martial law. The former justice minister's "just society."

Above: Interior of main congregation section of La Basilique Notre-Dame de Montréal . This is a fairly famous view. It was shot as part of a Kodak pamphlet years ago. I think it was the one on color. It was also the scene of a regular Christmas television performance by Luciano Pavarotti.

Info: Basilique Notre-Dame de Montréal
Left: The Sacré-Cœur chapel behind the main congregation area seen above. The chapel was destroyed by a fire in 1978 and has since been reconstructed.

The evening commute.
I don't remember where I took this photo. It could be the rail line that runs along Boulevard de Maisonneuve west of the Autoroute Décarie. But that's just a guess.
