Ruby's Last Moments

When volunteering for the MSPCA on the 8th of March, I came across this 2 year old Golden Retriever named "Ruby." I instantly said to myself, "I'm going to be taking care of you today."   Little did I know at that moment, Ruby was scheduled to be euthanized that day by the owner. Apparently she bit the owner's daughter for unknown reasons and the owner brought her in. After finding this out later in the day, I decided I was going to spend more time than usual with her than I do with other dogs.

After about ten minutes with Ruby, I found absolutely no hostile behavior within her furry coat.  Which lead me to believe that maybe the daughter might have provoked Ruby, resulting in the bite. I honestly don't know the story, but it still saddened me to see such a wonderful animal leave this world so soon.

So after a half hour with Ruby, I fell in love with her. I thought to myself, "How can someone fall in love with an animal so quickly?" I eventually brought her back to her kennel and gave her a big hug and a kiss and more treats than any normal dog should receive.

As soon as I got home, I cried. Not only for Ruby, but for the other animals that meet the same fate as her due to lack of understanding of the nature of animals.

She was a good girl and I will not forget her.

These are the last moments of her life before she was put down that day. I hope you enjoy them, I know she would.

Good thing I don't have to speak these words. I'm a little choked up right now. This is a great story and the pictures are wonderful. You really got me with that last one.

thanks again for viewing and appreciation.

Update: apparently she had a bad history with biting over food. They (MSPCA) did many tests to determine her hidden aggression and found out she can be dangerous over food. So it seems that adoption was out of the question. So sad though.

"There are no bad dogs", Barbara Woodhouse used to say, "only inexperienced owners". I think Barbara was being polite, but it is the owner's responsibility to make sure that NO aggression is tolerated. My dog is about the same age and from the very start I would take her food away and give it back, so she wouldn't be protective of it. This is a sad story that most likely could've been avoided. Thanks for sharing.

Ditto to JeffS, "There are no bad dogs, only inexperienced owners." I have huskys. The breed is given a bad rap by those who have seen aggressive huskys. Ruby original owner could and should have done some things differently. Im saddened for her, as well as Srobbinsny's loss. "IF ONLY...."

Thanks for caring Srobbinsny and giving her love her last day.

Ah, how lucky Ruby was to have you by her side. My daughter has become a veterinary technician and she has had similar experiences - having to watch animals put to sleep who have injuries that their owners can't or won't pay for. She says it's the hardest part of her job. Thank you for caring for animals. It's a wonderful thing.
