Model X-1 Stephen Hasham 1820

In 1820, Stephen Hasham, our Great Great Grandfather made this clock.   In 1822 he installed it in Pittsfield MA.  This clock drove 3 separate clock faces.  It now lives in the Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield MA.

Today, my Brother Michael and I made a pilgrimage out to see Stephen's work "in the flesh".

It was an amazing thing to see Stephen's work up close.  To think -  he worked on this piece over 175 years ago, then one day his great great granchildren happen along and take digital photographs and post them on a planet wide web for people to see.

Stephen - no bashful marketer himself - would probably approve.

This is the transmission that powered the three clock faces when this clock ran in a tower.

Never one to take it easy Great Great Grandfather was close to 60 when he installed this clock.

He made and installed clocks into his eighties.

These gears are the part of the clock system that drove the striking of the tower bell.

According to Mr Donn Haven Lathrop, who has done extensive research on Stephen Hasham, Stephen's setting dials were among the most elegant made at the time.  The setting dial was synchronized with the outside hands so that the clock operator could set the time accurately while inside the clock tower.

Thank you for all your help Mr Lathrop!

Roy: beautiful photo/essay of an amazing work by your great-great grandfather. I'm always stunned by the ingenuity and art that went into these creations of the past, things we now take for granted. The photos have a nice flow, and I love the subtle colors and shapes in transformed photo #1. It looks like a modern interpretation of what an illustration in an old book might look like.
