Maple Syrup Time

Several years ago

We began what has become a tradition

at Our place on skeleton lake.

We're blessed with an abundance

of Sugar maples and that means maple syrup!

Everyone knows you must have a proper place to boil down the sap in the spring.

my husband, son and a couple of buddies

got out the chain saws

and built themselves a log cabin in the woods.

It took several months

to build the cabin

from logs donated by a neighbour.

they finished in the fall

leaving plenty of time

to prepare the inside

for the boiling of the sap

the following spring.

Trees were marked

in the fall

so that they could be

easily found and tapped

when the time was right.

the sap begins to run

when the days are sunny

with warmer temperatures

and the nights are still

below freezing.

Normally six or seven trees are tapped.

the sap is collected

during the week by a neighbour

and we go up on the weekend

to do the boil.

there is generally only about a two week period in which sap can be collected.

once the trees begin to bud they are

untapped.

The sap is filtered

and poured into

a custom made stainless steel pan.

the woodstove is also homemade

and the guys really enjoy keeping the fire going and,

of course, having a few libations

to pass the time.

Boiling down the sap is a long process.

We've often wondered how many of cases of beer it takes to make

a gallon of maple syrup............

When the syrup is

finally done

(that is always a heavily debated topic

amongst the men...)

it's poured into containers

and divided up between those who helped.

we then have a neighbourhood

potluck lunch.

Everyone brings something

and we fry up all the fish

the men had caught

ice fishing over the winter.

Last year we were treated to

moose kabobs, venison chili

and the star of the show was actually

the garbage can turkey.

it's always a feast!

Our boil begins this weekend.

Can't wait for the spring party!

I neglected to mention that you get one gallon of syrup for every 40 gallons of sap collected. Now you now why it is so expensive.

Great tabblo. I had to laugh when I saw the Crown Royal bottle. I once photographed Saide Bronfman, the matriarch of the family that owned Seagram. Very friendly and polite people. No sense of "we're billionaires and you're not!"

I've never had "garbage can turkey." I have heard recently of deep fried turkey, which I've been told is delicious and cooks very quickly. It seems to be a bit dangerous to cook that way though what with dropping a big turkey into a bigger vat of almost boiling hot oil with a big fire underneath.

Great picture story about a great community.

Ah yes....the Crown Royal bottle.......they seem to be just the right size for storing the syrup. Everyone keeps their empty bottles and we just keep recycling! I have met Mitch Bronfman and he is also a very down to earth man.

Wow! That's quite an elaborate set up. Looks like a lot of fun. We actually tapped one our own trees for the first time last year and made a little bit of syrup. It was wonderful! Great tabblo! Nice job.
