every civilization when it loses its inner vision and its cleaner energy, falls into a new sort of sordidness,

more vast and more stupendous than the old savage sort. an augean stable of metallic filth.

the goal of every culture is to decay through over-civilization; the factors of decadence, -- luxury, skepticism, weariness and superstition, -- are constant. the civilization of one epoch becomes the manure of the next  cyril connoly

This Tabblo has so many levels. Your first (last) shot is so incredible. The way you framed it with the words is so unique and artistic. The message is very thought provoking. it makes me feel so small, a speck in time. The exterior shots are so good. The last one especially #9. Where is this?

PAM: This is downtown Rio. I took these pics during Carnivals, when I was walking back to the parking lot where I had left my car, after watching some parades. I looked through that green door you can see on pic #10 and saw the destruction inside. Then I took the two pics (the one that opens this tabblo and the one that finishes it) and started to photograph all the decaying buildings around. I would visit this area more ofter if it weren't so dangerous on weekends (when the streets are empty, and only thieves and crazy photographers can be seen here and there).

Eduardo, this directly knocks on mind ! I love your philosophical presentation !

It's SAD to see all these decaying buildings :( but it does make for some great photography.
Eduardo.affonso said at 4:28 p.m. on Mar 18, 2007:
Thanks, SETU. Urban decay is one of my favorite subjects, and it makes me think in a philosophical way about our civilization, about what we are doing to our cultural heritage and to ourselves.

MITTENS: Yes, it's so sad - but, in the other hand, these buildings are quite photogenical, aren't they? This is a great contradiction, finding beauty in such a sad thing.

EDUARDO, how did you infuse such beauty into these decaying structures?!!! this has been a recurring theme for your tabblos and you are very proficient at it! i think part of the beauty is the sense of loss and wonder at what it once was...which was a beautiful structure. also we seem to be witnessing how time and indifference can wreck havoc on even a great structure. kudos.

some buildings, like house plants, should be mercy killed. oh dear, i am in a cynical mood tonight. it must be spring not arriving and winter still blowing cold winds here.
Eduardo.affonso said at 7:56 a.m. on Mar 20, 2007:
Obrigado, OSCAR. O tema é dos meus favoritos, e você vai vê-lo repetidas vezes neste site. Apareça sempre!

WOODY: I once read that beautiful buildings make beautiful ruins - and I do believe this. It means that the ruins of those buildings produced nowadays will be awful ruins in the future.

SHIRL: I agree with you. Some buildings are in agony and it would be better for them to be demolished before they fall over our heads (like this one i photographed). Autumm is supposed to arrive today, but it's still hot as hell. Maybe our Autumm and your Spring just ran away and are living together somewhere in Pluto.

~i am very entranced by these phots~the 7th and 8th are wonderful studies~i would love to paint these both~i agree and think the majority of our contemporary buildings will not be beautiful in their atrophy~i also like the glimpses of the bright street signs to add to the insult of these aged beauties~thank you.

I absolutely loved how you creatively framed that first wonderful shot!! What a great Tabblo, Eduardo! Nice!!
EMA said at 7:01 p.m. on Mar 23, 2007:
Great tabblo Eduardo! I wonder what you feel beeing an architect when you look at such decay. Do you think about reconstructing them? About bring them back to their times of glory?
Regards my friend!
Jillcdunn said at 7:02 p.m. on Mar 23, 2007:
One can look at several of these buildings and see that they were once really beautiful but it is sad that through all the neglect and passage of time they have lost so much of that beauty. You did a really great job on this!

Eastas fotos son excelentes Eduardo, la forma como captaste esos rayos de luz a traves de los hoyos es magnifica. Muy buen tabblo!!
Hyhoa said at 4:35 p.m. on Mar 25, 2007:
This tabblo make me thinking on your" Urban, too urban " . Love your ironic and philosophical poetry on urban decadence ( The poems are always good choices , Nietzsche or DH Lawrence )A great contrast in comparison to the colored and glamorous Carnivals you've left ! So are most of the Megalopole ?So, no rencontre with thieves ? Just kidding !
Love2laugh said at 10:27 p.m. on Mar 25, 2007:
Eduardo - how do you manage to take things that are ugly sometimes ... and make them beautiful and artistic? You have such an eye for it. If you view people the way you view buildings.. I'd be beautiful.. hahaha... !!!
Tigercub said at 7:57 a.m. on Mar 31, 2007:
i adore this. thanks.
Eduardo.affonso said at 2:03 p.m. on Mar 31, 2007:
Thanks for your visit, TIGER!

SHEILA: I'm not the one who makes ugly things look different - it's your eyes to perform this change. All I do is to "crop" the reality, suggest a different frame and then your eyes do the rest. I do see people the same way, by the way...

HY HOA: Yes, these photos do evoke that tabblo. Those photos were taken in São Paulo, these were taken here in Rio. Both cities can be called "megalopole". Fortunatelly I met no thieves (otherwise, my cam would be now in someone else's hand).

NOE: Gracias. Todo eso fué pura suerte...

JILL: I have already written many times that "beautiful buildings make beautiful ruins", and I like these buildings for what they were once. They remind me of our own destiny: aging gracefully is very difficult.

EMA: Wish I could buy some of these buildings and bring their dignity back. But it would be very expensive, and nobody would like to live nor work in such neighborhood, so...

KELLY: Thanks! I've been learning from some of you!

KATE: I'll be waiting for your paintings inspired by these photos. And wonder which poems you would choose to escort them.

TAMMY: I'm afraid I'm getting addicted to this subject (decay), but I'll do my best to find any original way to approach to it.

In everything you write Eduardo ... I see that you can view people the same way. What a gift that is. You may not even realize it ... but it's a beautiful part of WHO YOU ARE ... I mean that.
