The Orton Effect and HDR Experiment #1

I've  dabbled in variations of this effect before, but have never seriously attempted to apply it until today.  This is my first try and did not get too adventuresome.  I've used Digital Image Suite before, but have not been able to get it to work quite like the process should.  I don't have Photoshop or Adobe Elements installed currently, but gave it a whirl in Serif PhotoPlus 7.  I wasn't able to follow the instructions for Adobe Elements I found online but got the gist of the process and was able to get the proper layers,  screens etc..

I've read that it works best when shooting in RAW.  I used JPEG here and have just started shooting in RAW.  Had to buy a much bigger CF card ! I've place the original first.  I could have done more Gaussian Blur now that I see the two together, but what the heck....try, try again!

For those who would like to see a good video tutorial on the subject check out:

Have fun!

Nice experiment ! Thank you so much for information, I have serif photo plus and adobe photoshop
both, but I've never used ! I think I must learn these effects and create artistic images, it's great fun once we learn !

A couple of months ago, Candice made a Tabblo on this effect and I looked into it then. Then Anders started showing us some of his pieces. Just had to see what I could do. So thanks folks, for being an inspiration!

Thanks for the video tutorial link. I've only used the Orton Effect to give a little more depth to flat low contrast images and image areas, avoiding any real blur. I haven't tried enhancing the blur to give what I see as a greased filter fuzzy blur effect. That's something photographers used to do with film. A clear filter would be put on a lens and some petroleum jelly grease would be smeared on lightly to blur areas of the scene. I think this effect can be overdone giving a grainy and even mottled look in some parts of an image.

Well...would you believe I still use petroleum jelly to on a clear filter. Still use pantyhose and gauze too....sort of dating myself, aren't I? I can see that the Orton Effect can also be used to pump up the colour (lots of possibilities when working with layers). I don't know that I'd use it for everyday but for something artistic, go for the gusto!

Interesting experiment. Thanks for the website for the instructions. It is certainly something to try and see what we can do with some new ideas on photo finishing. I must bookmark the site to see it again. It isi so nice when someone posts something useful to fellow photogroaphers. Thanks for sharing.

I still use pantyhose, too! Patty, you are getting quite adept with the new camera. I know you are a skilled photographer and that just adds to the overall quality of your work. Love these photos!
