ice age

water is the only substance on earth that decreases in density as it becomes a solid...H2O does increase in density as it gets colder, but only up to around 4 C when it goes haywire and actually decreases in density as it reaches the freezing stage of zero degrees Celsius.

which is the reason why ice floats, and why lakes freeze from the top downwards. if water were like any other liquid on earth, it would freeze from the bottom upwards...not so nice for the fishies...which would find themselves gulping air at the top of the lake as the ice rose...

these photos were taken moments after the sun had set (see my previous tabblo: winter beach). the day had begun at a warm 37 F, but was dropping fast as the sun dipped below the horizon...temperatures were approaching 20 F at the time these were taken.

From whose womb comes the ice? Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens when the waters become hard as stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen?

Job 38:29-30

Very cool Woody! I love seeing when the ice breaks up like this and piles up along the shore. We drive up past Duluth, MN along the North Shore of Lake Superior sometime just to see that. It's awesome! Very nice job!

=) thank you for the kind comments EVERYONE. that day as i surveyed the panorama of the scene with my daughter by my side, the serenity of it all just blew my mind (my pictures hardly do justice to it)...at the same time we could sense the awesome power of nature, a power that could freeze literally tons upon tons of water....all this while being very careful not to accidently slip and fall into the icy deep...!!! KEN: Lake Superior im sure has "some" ice too! O.BOGUS: i was hoping for better lighting conditions but it got dark so fast after the sun set. PAM: i had been reading about some of the properties of water and how life as we know it would not be able to exist without this liquid, im surprised i remember that much! TAMMY: i could not resist using that verse from the book of Job, the Scriptures are literary works of art and quite appropriate i thought for this tabblo. thanks again EVERYBODY! =)

Brrr...it sure looks chilly, and the blue tones accentuate the chill of the icy air. Very well captured and displayed. Good work.
