Cape Cod in March (part II, film)

Went to Cape Cod on the 10th and 11th of March with members of the Boston Photography Center and we had a blast. Winter is the perfect time to visit the Cape. Try it and you'll see!

These photos were shot with a Kiev 60 medium format  (120 format, 60x60mm frame)  camera and 80mm Volna lens with the following expired slide film:

Fuji Velvia 50 iso (RVP)

Fuji Provia 400 iso (RHPIII)

Kodak Ektachrome Plus 100 iso (EPP)

I found a dead bird and coyote (or dog?) on the beach in Wellfleet within a stone's throw of each other. Such a strange coincidence to find two dead animals in one place.

Cape Cod can be harsh in the winters.

These slides were definitely overexposed... I think it may have been because I thought the Ektachrome I was shooting was a slower speed than it was. It's also expired, but usually expired film does lose speed, so that can't be the reason. Probably user error! Luckily, the detail in the darker areas was retained pretty well, but the highlights are really blown out.

I also shot a bunch of digital photos. If you want to see them, click here!

Your talent continues. These are really terrific. Love the first one!

Love these, particularly the shallow depth of field. What that in camera or in PS?
Engelgrafik said at 1:28 p.m. on Apr 6, 2007:
Hiya Chris, how goes it? You know, it's funny how people ask me about the depth of field on the photos I take with my Kiev 60 and Volna 80mm lens. muhahahahhaah... I *never* do Photoshop depth of field tricks. It's the lens, baby! These Ukrainian cameras and lenses rule! The only Photoshop I ever do without saying to others "I did some Photoshop" is simple color correction, dodging, burning, and stuff like that... basically stuff that you can't do in a darkroom, I try not to do in Photoshop because it makes things look really fake. For the record, this expired film tends to have a color cast, so I do correct a bit to expand the curves... but not too much. Sometimes I actually like the color cast and I'll keep it. But never do any blurring. I do do some sharpening though because consumer scanners always soften your negatives or transparencies.

Cool, I wish I could have gone on the trip but I was away that weekend. I love the ice formations.

very nice herr engel! i remember going to cape cod with you and trav one winter and it was like a ghost town. so what is the aperature range of the russian vulva lens? f2? f1? f0.845392?

and those dead animals....The Invasion has begun.

Volna 80mm f2.8 prime lens (no zoom, fixed focal length). The thing is that as lenses get bigger, focal lengths change to create different effects with depth of field. Medium format lenses are like 2X as big as 35mm lenses. So my 80mm lens on a 60mm frame is the equivelant of about 44mm on a 35mm frame camera. But the depth of field starts to get funky. You should see large format... you get what's call "Schimelpflug effect" or something like that. I forget the spelling, but it's a way to get people and cars far away to look like little toys, as if your far away photo is actually a macro or close up shot. I do a lot of this kind of photography with my Lensbaby on my digital SLR. This is another thing a lot of people are doing in Photoshop, but why waste hours in photoshop when you can spend that time taking cool photos? That's what I always say!

BTW, for those interested, here's a great review of the camera I used. This is exactly what I used for all of these photos. http://mattdentonphoto.com/cameras/kiev_60.html The Kiev 60 is a BIG camera. Imagine a 35mm camera but twice the size. And instead of it sounding like "ssss-click" when you hit the shutter, it goes "ka-CLUNK". It actually sounds like a gun. Which makes sense because these cameras were built by the Soviets in the Arsenal plant, which is where they also made weapons!

Awesome, Jeff. The ones with the water on the beach are surreal.

I think you meant to say that you only do in Photoshop what you CAN do in the darkroom.

You're just that good.
Engelgrafik said at 2:29 p.m. on Apr 6, 2007:
Ah you're right JB. Thanks for catching that. I can see Banafsheh quoting that on me sometime! hahah.

Very dream like. I second or third the Photoshop comments. All you need to do is ask how long it would take to do the same thing on a computer compared to how long it takes in the field. Bravo Jeff!

Jeff these are very cool, the depth of focus is very "wow"! you've got quite an impressive bag of toys there and even with the expired slides the images came out beautifully...even the so called "over-exposed" shots. nice work dude.
