Ox race is a thrilling sport in rural Punjab, Pakistan. Two pair of oxen are tied to the wooden boards [ Suhagas ] and driven by expert drivers in a circle of 1mile. The team with the fastest time wins. The drivers yell, raise the wooden sticks to intimidate the bulls, the crowd roars and the bulls take of at tremendous speed.
Pride of the bull owners is at stake. If any of them looses the race, mostly they hand over the expensive bulls to the winning party as a reward. But these days the race is a big part of rural festivals and offers enticing cash prizes.
It is a custom to take bulls on a round of the playfield so they can have an idea about the pitch they will run on. |
