Gender-online vs. real life

It is evident online that it is very gender biased, just as we see in everyday real life. For example, women are viewed as sex objects rather than their brains and skills which may be reasons why they feel as though they have to disguise their gender online, to protect themselves. Included is a perspective on women are sometimes portrayed. (which is not true) :)

WOMEN

"It is true that switching gender via the internet can be an enlightening experience and many online participants have reported new insights when they logged in as the opposite sex." (Gurak, Laura. Cyberliteracry, pg 79).  Like real life situations, women were harassed more, asked out on dates with private messages from males asking

MEN

them for a date.  Females are often given more attention and in certain areas on the internet, such as MUD (which I will introduce later) sometimes sends unwanted and sexual advances which create uncomfortable atmosphere for women. This can be compared to certain areas we know around us.

Men, on the other hand, were approached less frequent online, much like real life and it is easier for them to respond to an unwanted individual. From a man's perspective, they have a different attitude about sexual advances which can be seen as less threatening than a woman would feel.

It can be said that sometimes male characters often expect sexual favors and usually this is in exchange for technical assistance online. Usually, a gift exchanged online includes an obligation from the woman. This can be compared to incidents in real life situations. Through MUD, these experiences are openly shared and discussed in the open.
