Jazzfest 2007 (Part 1)

We got down to New Orleans on Thursday.  I nearly got bumped off the connection in Atlanta.  "We'll get you there tomorrow" Delta said.  That would have been a diaster.

First up was "Fanfest" a  new, free Jazzfest warm-up near our hotel.  Charmain Neville on stage in the picture.

Loren "poses" with Stanton Moore. He's absolutely everywhere. I swear he's cloned himself.

You'd be amazed how many people ask about the shirt.

Thursday night was Rebirth Brass Band and Dirty Dozen Brass Band at Tipitina's, Uptown

Friday started with cab #666.  It turned out to be a valid omen.  We got in the Batiste Brothers (so-so) then went over to the blues tent.  The music there was great, but the weather intruded.

It bucketed.  4 inches of rain in a couple hours.  You see a couple of shots of the water - it got over a couple feet deep in places, IN the tent.  We went outside in a lull, and then it poured again.  My camera got wet, so no more pictures Friday.

After the rain the music was good at least.  Better than Ezra and Counting Crows were on my list.

We went to Republic and saw Nomo and Ozomatli.  They were both fantastic.

Today was much better.  Hot and sweaty, lots of people, lots of good music.  Today's favorites were Morning 40 Federation and, of course, Cowboy Mouth.

Check out the crowd shots.

LOL! I got a Youk shirt and Redsox tix for Mother's day. How cool is that?

I'm glad to see N'Orlenz coming back from Katrina.

Despite the rain looks like you had a good time. I haven't seen Cowboy Mouth in years - guess they are still going strong. Looks like you had a great variety of bands there to see!

Nice work! Why didn't I think to shoot all the food floating trash we were standing in Friday? The Gentilly Stage was like a water park with the ditch full of about 2' of water by the left audience area, but Ivan Neville's short set was fun and I got some good shots of both Better than Ezra and Counting Crows you might want to check out. i was on the other side of the Blues tent while the rain was tapering off and kids were paddling around on the SoCo (Southern Comfort) inflatable sofas like they were kayaks! Meanwhile the only place to watch from was in about a foot of water, similar to your "guest entrance" shot. And I was at the Lafayette, arrived during the FanFest right next door. Probably bumped into you in the crowd! Look for my tabblo under my name or search New Orleans Jazz & Heritage 2007 to see some rain shots and more close up music shots (I suffered to get right by the stage all 3 days)...

So, did you feel safe?? The murder rate is supposed to be so high now after Katrina, so I have been avoided going. We used to go there at least once a year for hot jazz, hot *nights*, and cool drinks :)
