Griffith Park Fire

5:46 p.m.

The fire didn't start out as much. I figured I'd go to the top of my closest hill and see what was going on. I didn't expect to stay there for three hours.

5:49 p.m.

This was the first bit of actual flame I saw.

6:17 p.m.

More flames start to show up on the hills right behind the row of houses closest to the park.

6:20 p.m.

Three helicoptors would disappear for 15 minutes or so, getting water from the Silver Lake Reservoir, then reappear to douse the flames. For a while it seemed like it was working.

6:21 p.m.

This was the first sign that the fire wasn't going to go away quickly. A really tall wall of flame that appeared out of the canyon.

6:50 p.m.

Though no houses here were harmed, the fire seemed very close.

6:55 p.m.

One of two non-helicopter planes that were involved in fighting the fire.

6:58 p.m.

6:58 p.m.

Keep an eye on this hillside where rescue vehicles are parked. Later in the evening the whole hill be on fire.

7:01 p.m.

7:16 p.m.

Right behind the green house, one of the most visable homes on this hillside, there is a piece of red flame.

7:17 p.m.

Wow, this is really sad. I hope it comes under control. I hate to think of people losing their homes. My house burned down when I was young.

These photos are great, nice job! I really hope the observatory is safe. I haven't heard of any homes burning yet...let's hope it stays that way!

you captured the awesome power of an inferno ... one can only hope the inferno is contained soon, especially before it reaches the observatory or any of the homes in nearby neighborhoods.

Thanks everyone. Fortunately, the fire seems to be getting under control and the Observatory is safe. There was very little damage to structures, though it looked very ominous last night. Eventually I will make this page time sequential with some notes on what is going on in some of the pictures.

Very nice shots. You have redeemed yourself :)

I uploaded some photos and created 3 Tabblos. Not a particularly user-friendly system......or perhaps this illustrates the fact that I am a technotard.
