Will A $0.00 Lens Really Work?

I was reading about Pinhole cameras, and an idea popped up in my brain..What about combine the oldest way of taking pictures with the latest technology ? So I made a pinhole lens to my Nikon DSLR.

The D.O.F, dept of field is amazing, ranges from .5 mm-infinity.....As you can see on the pictures here.

An other thing is that the pics don't get very sharp, not really blurry, but very soft.

All pictures above are shot with Nikon D40 with a $0.00 Lens, the shutter time was 1sec-1.5sec and the hole is as little as I could make it, just the point of a pin on a thin piece of metal can lid, mounted on the protection body cap.

Thanks for your comments. I want to add a few things if someone want to spend the $0.00 to make a lens. The hole is the important part, it should be as little as possible and round, I made 3 trails until I got it right, when just the point of the pin went trough the tin. When you have the hole, sand the little metal tin to get the hole clean and when it's glued in place take a black marker and make the side that is in towards the camera black, didn't do that first and got a very pale photo form the reflexions.

I love it when people open up their mind and think and or create with out boundry's. Question, what was the ISO and speed and other technical details please
Floridamolle said at 7:30 p.m. on May 13, 2007:
Thank you Oscar and Bdoyle. O caurse it had to be done with camera in manual, but ISO was at 200 and white balance at auto. This was my first pictures since I got the lens working, and I will keep on testing different settings, with ISO 800 or even 1600 the shutter time will come down. An other thing is to put a little tube between and see how "tele" will work. As the sensor is so small on a D40, it's already some "tele" with the "lens" flat to the body

Anders, you are the master! I remember doing pin holes with quaker oats boxes back in high school (further back than I care to admit, much less remember!) never would have thought to do this. and you got such great results! so cool!

Way cool experiment.

I'd be cautious about using this in a dusty environment. You'd be surprised how dust can get through the smallest of holes with a blow of the wind....

You are soooo creative - and this is cool. I bet you could sell them for $1 on ebay LOL

Cool idea. I genuinely like the idea of taking a new DSLR and using it for pinhole photography, and the result is speaking for itself.

You've just brought pinhole photography into the 21st century. You should submit some stuff to www.pinhole.org. I see there was discussion of digital pinhole in the forums there but nothing conclusive, so you may make some stir there :)

I remember my fist homemade pinhole camera! Similar to Elizabeths. WOW, never dreamed of going backwards to low tech with my DSLR. You are amazing! I'd like to see more.
