Celebrating the Spirits in Taipei - June 2007

On a short walk to the open air market in the Tienmu neighborhood of Taipei on a Sunday afternoon, I came across a parade celebrating the spirits. Many of the storefronts burned incense and placed offerings of fruit and ceremonial paper money to the spirits passing in by in the parade. Some also set off firecrackers. I was told that the parade was held in honor of offering peace. Many of the Chinese Gods and spirits such as Matsu were represented in this parade.

The market looks different from my visit ten years ago. Thank you for posting these photos. I like the photo of temple. Ah, yes Matsu, the Goddess of the Sea, if memory serves.

Nice photos :-)

i was gonna say it looks more like a parade than what I'm used to seeing on New Year's but I guess this is not New Year's. Very cool photos though. I really need to get over there one day.
