Eddie, a co-worker, goes to Drum and Bass night at Elements (Phoenix Landing) every Thursday. He said "If you're ever going to go to one, Klute is the one to see!" So I went.
First was the resident DJ Lenore. I think the photos captured her almost perfectly. On stage she was very focused and essentially emotionless. She's a sort of Ice Queen. It's not that she has a hostile or anything - she's an absence of emotion.
She's standing behind a big table with 3 or 4 turntables (CD and vinyl) and a sound board. She frequently checks the bags and boxes on the floor, pulling out new tracks. |

The room was pretty full. I stood up near the front, mostly standing on the bench that runs around the edge of the room.
The show is loud. Really loud. Eddie says it's 135db, and I don't doubt it. I wore ear plugs and the show was comfortable to listen to. Some people had earplugs, some didn't. The ones that didn't will have ringing ears for a while.
I expected to be conspicuously old, but that wasn't the case. There were lots of 20's and 30's there and even a few 40's.
The crowd was very into the show. Lots of dancing, moving with the music, stuff like that. The music is so loud that there is little if any talking. In fact, things like walking through the crowd to the bar are pretty hard - no one can hear you, you can't talk to them, you have to tap them to get them to move.
And finally, at midnight: Klute! |
