Brown Headed Cowbird (Read Below)

The Brown Headed Cowbird is one bird my grandma hates. She calls them "Satan's Birds." With a beautiful coffee colored head and a finch-like beak this bird has a beautiful appearance, but is an opportunist.

The Cowbird lays it's egg one at a time in other song-bird's nests. Often the Cowbird young outgrows and outeats the other young birds. The result is the other young starve or get pushed out of the nest, while the Cowbird thrives.

Male Red-winged Blackbird

Female Red-winged Blackbird

House Finch (?)

Hungry House Cat

Why ARE you following me? I was trying to get some bird...

There was more than one feral feline visitor to the feeder. It was apparent when they were around because suddenly the air went quiet. I captured this very pregnant prowler rubbing herself lovingly against my grandpa's homemade cat trap. My grandma's four footed visitors are generally wild, though this momma-to-be was the healthiest looking of the bunch I saw over the week.

Scent-marking grandpa's homemade cat trap.

My parents sensed my budding desire to learn about wildlife and bought my first (and only) Audubon Field Guide. It has been a trusty resource that still provides accurate information about birds in Western Canada. I recently spent a week at Grandma's watching her bird-feeder and shooting through the smudgy glass. Her bird-friends were definately of the shy variety and so I had to settle for quality visual images first, and photographic ones second.

We have cowbirds up here, too. I knew a guy whose personal behavior was much like that of a cowbird. ;)

I love the blue head of the Grackle and the beautiful wings of the Red-Winged Blackbird. You got some really gorgeous shots. Birds are so pretty as well as fascinating, aren't they?

Wonderful. The info on the cowbird is very interesting. And the picture of the female red-wing was a surprise. I never knew the female looked like that. Thanks!

Such wonderful pictures. They are so sharp and colorful. I wasn't expecting to see cats at the end of the tabblo. Great touch!

These are excellent shots Destiny and all through a smudgy glass! All the birds are beautiful and the info you have provided is very interesting. I found the American Goldfinch and the blackbirds very pretty birds. The cat's pictures are very good too. Love these bird feeders your grandma has set up. I wish i could put up something like this. But i don't think it would be available here. Will have to check. All these birds(especially the smaller ones) look so cute sitting in their individual eating booths :o)

Great tabblo, and nicely layed out! I like how the cat pictures suddenly pop in at the bottom and how the birds above seem to be looking down at it! :)

The Female Red-Winged Blackbird was actually shot from outside the smudgy glass... you can see how much better the sharpness and quality is when compared to some of the others.

Thanks everyone for your great comments.

This is just amazing to me! I'm so used to living in my concrete world here in L.A. that it's like a whole other world when I see the birds that people have right in their own backyards!! We have a few coastal birds we can see when at the beach, but that's it. All we have here are sparrows and doves, nothing remotely as gorgeous as those birds you took pictures of.
