Maligne Lake was about an hour outside of Jasper. The day that we were there was just beautiful, so we got lots of great pictures, including several pretty cool panoramas. |

Medicine Lake is on the way to Maligne Lake. It's a cool "seasonal lake", according to the interpretive materials at this scenic viewpoint. Apparently there are some big cracks in the ground under the lake, and the water leaks away into an underground stream that ends up in a lake about 17 kilometers away. Through much of the year, water gets away through the cracks faster than it enters the lake from the Maligne River, so Medicine Lake is just a mud flats. In the Spring and Summer, however, meltwater from the glaciers is enough to increase the flow of the Maligne River to the point where water accumulates in Medicine Lake because it can't get away fast enough. |

The rest of these pictures are from Maligne Canyon. Here the Maligne River has cut a canyon that is as narrow as 6 feet but as deep as 150 feet. It's pretty amazing, actually, but it's just about impossible to photograph.
