MOTHER AND DAUGHTER, TWO - FER

Seeing my interest in drawing, my father arranged for a drawing teacher for me, when i was 14. The gentleman was a very fine artist and teacher and because of my interest in portraits showed me how to draw one. He took an old favourite childhood photo of myself and showed me the technique of drawing a portrait. This is what he drew.An exact replica of my photo..i was fascinated.

Now, my assignment was to draw a portrait on my own. So i picked another favourite picture of mine, an old photo of my mother's.And this is what i drew. My first portrait...Quite a decent copy of my mother's photo(even if i say so myself  ;o) My teacher too, was pleased.)  Unfortunately, i got busy with my examinations and school work and couldn't continue learning drawing. The gentleman must have taught me for about a month.I wish now, that i could have had more classes with him.

The student's drawing is better than the teacher's.
:-)

Doreen, Zippy : Thank you :o)

Oh no Paul..LOL..His drawing is far superior..somehow in the photo that i took, my drawing is looking better. So it's probably the photography that's good here and not the drawing :o) Thank you for that wonderful compliment :o)

A great and different twist of the Tabblo concept. Thank you ... the stories really make the Tabblo

You have a great talent!
Elchante said at 3:08 p.m. on Jul 2, 2007:
You were a clever student who learned the techniques well. You know, that all this resurgence of interest in your drawings and sharing them on Tabblo is going to motivate to start drawing again. I bet there is an art class somewhere near you right now. Go for it! Great Tabblo and story, nice choice of colors. I'm looking forward to seeing your "new" drawings. :)
Vinca said at 3:16 p.m. on Jul 2, 2007:
Frank, Paolo : thank you :o)

Elchante : Thank you so very much for your highly encouraging words. You are right, sharing these old drawings has gotten me slightly motivated to re-start drawing. All of you are so kind and encouraging that i think i will start learning the finer points again, very soon :o)

Well Vinca, I think the best advice you may have had in a long time is Elchante's. You definitely have talent, both in drawing and in photography. Take a class - you have nothing to lose - and see where it takes you. You might be thrilled with the results - your life might just take off in a different direction!
Geddon22 said at 3:52 p.m. on Jul 2, 2007:
Vinca you did a terrific job. That's a beautiful portrait. Ditto Elchante--it's not too late! Take an art class :)
Vinca said at 3:55 p.m. on Jul 2, 2007:
Thank you Reta :o)

Noreen, you are absolutely right. My father too has been asking me if he should keep an art teacher for me again. And i agreed to this a few days back.Let's see if it helps my life take a different direction..i definitely hope so. Now, i am actually looking forward to re-starting drawing, thanks to all of you here. :o)

Lovely work, Vinca - it's never to late to pick up a pencil and start sketching again!
AliDar said at 4:23 p.m. on Jul 2, 2007:
Hey Vinca; I actually agree with Paul; your drawing is much better than your teachers. There is an expressiveness to the line, a variation of it's weight that creates a more interesting and engaging image. I have a B.F.A. from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, and the instructor from there that I respected the most, and learned the most from, taught that our ability to express and create is something innate and individual, and it is only when we try to emulate others that we loose that ablility. His method of teaching I suppose was to try to erase all of the learning that we had accumulated, and take us back to that innate expression that was just ours. I think he would have been pleased with your drawing, and would have thought your instructors work to be stilted. Accuracy isn't the only way to judge art.
Vinca said at 4:54 p.m. on Jul 2, 2007:
Cristina,Laura, Tammy : Gosh! You guys are so sweet and motivating. I think i will do just that..draw and put up my pictures here. Then all of you will have to endure the work.Don't hold me responsible later on :o)

Dar : WOW..you really think so? I never looked at my drawing that way. In fact, i had to take another look after i read your comment.. LOL. Well, actually i looked just like that in my photo(with a joyful gleam in my eye) and my teacher has duplicated that look whereas my mother looked a little melancholy in her photo,so that is why it probably is more expressive. Moreover, i know what my original picture looked like, so it's easier for me to relate to it. I couldn't find the photos, else i would have put them up here too, along with these two drawings. Thank you so much for your high praise and words Dar :o)

My list of adjectives is kind of running out... unless I begin reusing them. :o) Indeed great piece of work. Both the pencil sketches (from teacher & student) are good but cannot be compared. Perhaps, the selection of original pictures for this work also matters in this case.

That's quite amazing for a first portrait. You obviously have a lot of talent. Maybe if it's something that still intrest you, you could pick up your lessons where you left off so many years ago. I'm especially impressed with your shading abilities. Very nice.
