Paris Part 2 - The Eiffel Tower

Come along now!  Hurry up and eat your crêpes, we have to meet our tour director in FIVE minutes right under the Tower

Here we are almost there....WOW!  Look up! - come on we have to get to the elevator.

Now we are up on the viewing platform...take a good look around to the North, South, East and West.

It's getting darker now, and the boats have their lights on, isn't it pretty!

Time to go back down now - look down the elevator shaft...it's a bit scary!  Just like a giant Meccano set.

Here is the big wheel that holds the cable for the elevator. Do you think it looks safe enough?

Ah good! - back on the ground again  - let's look at the machinery which operates the elevator system, and then look up to the top of the tower from the inside. They have added a few lights at sunset.

Now we have to board our tour bus which will take us to a plaza overlooking the Eiffel Tower, so that we can see the sparkling light show which operates every evening at 10 p.m. for a short while.  It's quite spectacular with twinkling light sparkling on and off all over the tower, an amazing sight, but unfortunately it's not possible to capture the movement with my camera. This is where we need a camcorder.

Ok now!   Everyone back to the bus, time to go back to our hotel for a good night's sleep, ready for another busy day tomorrow at The Louvre and Notre Dame Cathedral.   Join me for Part 3, coming soon......

Looks like I have caught a ghost here on the left......

Goodnight Everyone! - See you on the bus in the morning!  Put your good walking shoes on, we are going to the Louvre and Notre Dame on our last day in Paris, and in fact the last day of our European Impressions tour, though we have one more night in London.

Thanks for the personal voyage through Paris. Haven't traveled much and I've never been to Paris so you're something of a tour guide to me sitting over here. I know we tried to figure out what's going on in some of these pictures with artifacts and banding. You can upload original images in their full size. Tabblo automatically sizes them for display. I wonder what some of these would look like displayed from full size.

Joan, this is wonderful. There are a lot of really good shots here, the underside of the tower #15 #16 #17. Love the colors. The shots of the city from high above remind me of the postcards and photos my parents have from their trips to Paris in the '40's. My fave is the third up from the bottom. The Tower at dusk. This Tabblo c'est magnifique! Bravo.

I absolutely love the very unique perspectives of the Eiffel. And the different colors give such nice varying moods. Great job!

Tabblo Critique :Love your trips, feels like being there. I kinda get in to a coma and wake up at the last picture. You have a masters eye for composition and angles. Wonderful. If I have to find something to critique, some of the pictures lack a little in sharpness, the next last one seems to have distortion around the tower. It can be that your camera has a hard time to handle high ISO settings or dark situations. GREAT JOB!!!

Sorry, the one with the tower is third up from bottom

Tabblo critique group: Wow, thanks for the tour! It's not something I'll probably every get to see, and you brought me up close and personal; I got vertigo on a couple of the shots! I love that you showed the workings of it; it really does look like a large Meccano set! I agree with Anders about the lack of sharpness in some of the photos and about the probable cause. Too bad, but I think just like you, I would still include them in this tabblo; the day's adventure wouldn't have been complete with out them. Thanks, and looking forward to seeing the next installment! :)

Thanks a lot everyone for nice comments and for constructive criticism. Special thanks to LatentE for help with post processing tips and hints. I have now replace the hilltop scene with domes, and the reddish vertical angle of the tower with reprocessed images courtesy of LatentE. I am hoping to reprocess some of the other pics here to improve them to the same extent, and replace them when I have a chance to work on them a bit more. I find this TCG (Tabblo Critique group) MOST helpful, and a great chance to learn more.

Just a bit of further information. I wanted to see if I could find what the problem might be with some of the images in Joan's recent tabblos. I asked to see a couple of the images in their original size. On seeing them I didn't see any of the flaws that appear in the tabblo. Somewhere in Joan's image processing, artifacts creep in. I made my own versions of the web oriented images, matching the size that Joan had used as well as the look (for the most part) so Joan could more easily make a comparison.

These original web intended images are actually smaller than they appear in the tabblo. That makes for a problem in that the browser then does an on-the-fly resizing of the image, incorporating its own flaws. In the Eiffel Tower image with the blue sky dominating the upper half the sky shows some mottling and the edge between steel and sky has some artifact ghosting. These are mainly due to the browser resizing. I've found that it's better to use an image that's larger than what will be displayed on the tabblo page. The artifacts introduced seem to be less apparent if the image is reduced in size rather than enlarged. A nice Tabblo feature might be to have images appear without resizing, but that would likely destroy or at least counter much of the automated formatting in the Tabblo building process.

Joan and I haven't yet isolated where exactly the artifacts come in but we're working on it. :P

I've noticed an approach that a member uses that seems to be fairly effective. The tabblo images uploaded are full size (or at least much larger than their display size in a tabblo) and also heavily over sharpened. This excessive sharpening, when reduced to tabblo display size, looks crisp and normal.

I enjoyed this tour. The Eiffel Tower is a beautiful structure and you've captured it wonderfully here. All the insides are just as interesting as the outside and the angles of some of these pictures is wonderful. I really have to get there some day.

Great shows of the Eiffel! Unfortunately we didn't go up it on our visit so it was great getting that perspective! Looks like we missed some great views!
