Uneva Peak above Vail Pass

Vail Pass:  June 29, 2007

Uneva Peak is a meadow flanked mountain just east and above the Vail Pass rest area and parking.    At 12, 600 feet elevation, it provides views of the Vail and Copper ski resorts, the town of Frisco, Lake Dillon, and the eastward stretch of I-70 up to the Eisenhower Tunnel.

Upper right:  Near treeline and the start of open meadowlands.

Right:   View down to I-70 and the Vail Pass rest stop.    Shrine Pass is on the West side of the road

Meadowlands with small brooks stretch upward to the final ridge.   The water suprisingly runs almost on the surface of the grade without cutting a deep ravine in most places.

Below Left:   We have reached the saddle between two peaks.   To reach Uneva we follow the ridge to the right and head up and southward.

Below Right:    Copper Mountain ski resort is visible to the south with a subpeak of Uneva in the foreground.

Above:    Mountain Man on an old mountain.

Above Right:   Old Man of the Mountain.

Right:    Liz feels the lure of the mountaintop views and sprints up the last incline to the peak.

Left:    Lake Dillon and the buildings of Frisco

Below:     The I-70 expressway stretches through the high country of Summit County easterly to the Eisenhower Tunnel

Looking northwest, the fabulous Two Elk Lodge is visible and back bowls of Vail...China Bowl to Outer Mongolia can be seen.

Below Left:    The Mount of the Holy Cross.    Religious pilgrimages were once common to this mountain.    The snow no longer completes the "cross" as the mountain has felt the effects of geologic time.

Below Right:     Ski runs at Keystone resort can be seen distantly in this photo to the southeast.

Mountain Man Dave and Mountain Woman Liz take a well deserved break and a wonderful view just inches from the US Geological Survey marker at the top of Uneva Peak.

Looking at the images I get the sense of the feeling of power and freedom in standing on top of a mountain and being able to see for miles and miles and maybe something more than miles.
