Night Along the Charles

Shot some Ilford FP4+ on my Holga and some Provia 400 on my Kiev 60. Provia is really nice at night.. the colors really pop, however it's not very forgiving. I only got three good exposures. Here are the two nicer ones and the one at the top was on the very end so it's ruined.

These photos were shot April 19, 2007, around the Boston University area along the Charles River.

The photo below is the railbridge underneath the "BU Bridge" which connects to Cambridge. A lot of people think it's abandoned and folks walk across it all the time in broad daylight with no trouble from the authorities (I've done it before). However, as we were taking pictures of it late that night, a slow-moving train came across blaring its horn, obviously with the knowledge that there might be people hanging out on the bridge late at night.

I really enjoy your investigation of materials and techniques. I keep going back to photo #1. I assume the vertical marks along the right side of the image are a random by-product of the camera, film stock, or frame position. Whatever it is, it creates an interesting tug of war between the emotive atmosphere of the photo that draws the viewer in, and the physical quality of the recording process that pushes back to the surface. Interesting work in all of these photos.

The pitfalls of film! Don't you love it? You are really doing some fine work and exploring with your camera and technique. These are very cool. Framing, subject matter, lightening. My fave is the 2nd shot..the point of view. Your eyes move down the stairs and into the shot. Are those headlights off to the left? Just love the quality that film gives to light.

Abking, yes, those marks mark the end of the roll. My Kiev 60 is a great camera, unfortunately its old Soviet era winding mechanism sometimes makes it hard to tell when you're really on your last shot. I tend to get greedy and I lose half a frame sometimes.

Pkeener, yeah those are lights to the left... that's Storrow Drive, the main thoroughfare in Boston that gets you to different neighborhoods relatively quickly. On the other side of the backhoe is the Charles River. Those boats are down the path. The lights you see in the back behind the boats, that's Cambridge, home of MIT and Harvard.
