Beth Norton Design: North Greenwood

This is a new-construction home in Mesa, AZ. This is the second home I have decorated for this client, and was fun to do because of her huge collection of WORDS, pictures, and neat accessories. Her taste varies all the way from shabby chic to contemporary, so I opted to do an eclectic style for her.

The client wanted a comfortable, semi-casual, simple look in the dining and living rooms. Walls were painted a flax (greenish-khaki) color, and the dining table was painted and given an antiqued finish to coordinate. The parsons chairs are covered by simple white cotton slipcovers. A purchased bookcase was transformed into a china hutch after being painted a lighter color and then antiqued inside to show off her pitchers, platters, and accessories. A large black-framed mirror leans against the wall next to the window to balance the room.

The living room is open to the dining room, so the color scheme was carried thru. Several styles marry in this room: the shabby chic cluster of distressed mirrors and cottage style coffee table and end tables are contrasted by the contemporary look of the glass ball lamps and sleek side chair, while the vase of sticks, rattan ottoman, and decorative basketweave and moss balls add a natural texture. The coffee table is one-of -kind, made from an antique door and topped with glass. The original hardware is left on to give added interest. Soft blues, greens, and white give this room a fresh, airy feel.

A short hallway joins the living room to the kitchen and great room. The soft blue color scheme is carried thru to these areas.

The kitchen and family room flow together seamlessly with the fresh blue, black, khaki, and white color scheme. The room has a sort of a cottage combined with nautical feel. The eclectic mix of shabby chic and traditional accessories are complimented by the natural elements of greenery, baskets, and the jute rug, while the hard lines of the dark granite countertop, stainless steel kitchenware, and glassware give the room a contemporary edge.

Word art gives the rooms an air of whimsey, while the architectural nook adds visual interest. Comfortable seating and lots of soft pillows offer an inviting place to sit and put your feet up. The crisp, white cotton duck drapes are hung extra high to accentuate the rooms' high ceilings, and the blue theme is carried throughout the room in the pillows, accessories, stoneware, and floral.

A funky side table painted with a harlequinn pattern and distressed accomodates the retro stainless steel phone, adding an unexpected twist to the scheme.

A fun picture collage in the stairwell beckons you to pause on the way upstairs.

This is the home office located in the upstairs loft area of the home. The client's occupation is creative, so this environment offers a fun, inspirational, and comfortable space for her to brainstorm and work. The shabby chic chandalier, comfy chair, pillows, and accessories are offset by the contemporary feel of the desk, electronics, word art, and bold wall collage. The unexpected combination of green, black, and pink works with the room's funky eclectic look.

The soothing turquoise blue color of this guest room combines with the natural elements of the basket-woven glass jars, bamboo candle and lamp, and the vase of horsetail greenery and river rocks to create a beachy, coastal feel. The funky, brightly colored flowered bedspread lends a tropical aire, while the crisp white linens, shuddered window, and time-worn window frame wall art complete the look, making this a true paradise for any guest.

Bathrooms deserve attention, too! Everything in this room is 'left-over' accessories that we couldn't find a place for anywhere else in the house. The huge metal 'e' looks great on top of the wall cabinet. I replaced the cheap chrome toilet paper dispenser with a brushed a nickel one, and vintage-inspired hooks take the place of the towel bar. You can't see it, but I took down the contractor-grade mirror and replaced it with a chunky black framed mirror, and I was still attaching ribbon to the picture frames literally moments before I needed to leave for the airport to get back home!

Gorgeous. Any of these would look right at home in a decorating magazine. I love interior design almost as much as I love photogaphy.
