Beth Norton Design: Kids Rooms

This baby boy's room mixes traditional style with modern using an updated version of the primary color palette with a vibrant, toned down green, blue, and red. Bedding from Pottery Barn Kids suggests a tropical theme, but isn't overly-done. The custom-ordered traditional style chair is contrasted by the contemporary ottoman, and provides a comfy place to sit with baby. Simple wall decor includes framed artwork and a large letter (the childs' initial). A side table made of three vintage suitcases stacked up adds an unexpected twist.

Soft yellow paint is highlighted by randomly stamped pink butterflies. Bedding in mattalasse, gingham, ric rac and quilted pillows give a time-worn , cozy feel to the room. The two matching nightstands double as storage with shelves below. Baskets are adorned with ric rac fabric liners. Custom artwork in pink frames hang from gross grain ribbon above the bed, and daisy hooks are used to hang additional frames. Breezey sheer drapes hang from a pink curtain rod with flower-shaped finials. This is a great example of how you can decorate a room on a very limited budget. Everything purchased for this room, including bedding, side tables, lamps, window treatments, accessories and paint supplies cost under $250.

This young girls' room was painted a pale blue to coordinate with her existing duvet cover. Star and moon plaques hang from ribbon above the bed. A blue, star-shaped shaggy rug, star-shaped finials, and star-adorned lamps and frames carry the theme throughout. The cottage-style white bed and bedding was purchased at Pottery Barn Kids. This is another example of decorating on a budget. This room cost only $500 to do, and included the purchase of the bed frame, nightstand, bedding, window treatments, lighting, accessories, and paint and supplies.

This teenage girls' room was painted a custom-mixed periwinkle color to match her existing bedding. Wood trim was added to the walls and painted white above to bring the feel of the vaulted ceiling down. Sheer curtains are suspended from a thin wire cable attached to the ceiling with O-rings to create an industrial four-poster effect. Lamps mounted to the wall above the bed highlight artwork and provide light for reading in bed.

This shared boys' room needed to provide lots of storage in a very small space. Bunkbeds take advantage of the vaulted ceiling, and the bold orange and grey paint colors accentuate the angular lines of the architecture. Custom drapery and pillows, as well as an orange lava lamp, spread the orange color around the room. Wall mounted lamps allow for reading in bed, and two tall side-by-side lockers provide lots of storage while taking up very little floor space. A matching locker-style media center houses a TV, video game and stereo equipment, as well as CDs. Wall-length floating shelves accomodate trophies, books, and nick nacks, while four wall-mounted magnet boards provide a place to display notes, pictures and keepsakes. The nine-foot mirrored closet doors visually enlarge the small room.
