RED CANYON, UTAH July 23, 2007 Red Canyon is located 14 miles west of Bryce Canyon on scenic Highway 12. We choose to ride the Thunder Mountain trail because of its higher elevation and viewpoints. Starting from the visitors center we headed east and uphill on a smooth asphalt track(below). After four miles we came to the end of the asphalt where we made a right turn onto the Coyote Hollow gravel road and headed w.southwest (right photo). Pedaling for about a mile and a half we were in the forested area and at the Thunder Mtn Trailhead. Here we left the gravel and started singletrack switchbacks(below right). Doing this loop clockwise allows the uphill portion to be asphalt and allows the more scenic section to be enjoyed during the downhill. This trail is especially nice because most of the single track is smooth, free of rocks and tree roots. The temptation is to ride fast, but don't forget to slow enough to take in the wonderful scenery.
Highway 12: Designated a National Scenic Byway and an All-American Road with one-of-a-kind features so exceptional that they qualify as a destination "unto themselves" making it one of the most unique roads in America. |

Hoodoos in brilliant color (above). After a wonderful ride, we made our way eastward to stay in the warm hospitality of Escalante Outfitters in downtown Escalante.
