Brooklyn Cycling - Time Trial Racing

There was an individual time trial cycling race at Floyd Bennett Field this past Sunday. The organization running the race is called the Century Road Club Association (CRCA). Time trial races are "against the clock" rather than directly side-by-side with other racers. The best time wins. No "drafting" allowed. No riding behind another racer to avoid the wind. Starters are staggered but even if racers should get near each other they're not allowed to race in a line. Team time trials allow teams to form line formations, but only teams. Everything about time trials is fighting the wind. Streamlining is critical and so the riders have streamlined bikes, streamlined apparel and streamlined helmets. Whatever makes you slippery to the wind is good.

I've put the sleekest looking racer at the top of the tabblo. Unfortunately there's a small problem. Notice the back tire. Flat or very near flat. That's the luck of the race sometimes. The clock doesn't stop for flats.

This image isn't from the time trials. It's from a race in Prospect Park a week ago but one of the racers was a volunteer at time trials and when I saw a picture of him from then I thought I'd add it in.

***** Update: I've added some more images from the race. In this update the images are of members of the Empire Cycling Team which did very well. *****

This second batch of images was also processed on my usual web linked setup. The images don't have the heavy tones and saturation of the first batch. Different computers give different looking results.

Great shots! These bikers have amazing leg muscles...there's no hair on these legs!

Great action shots, after watching the Tour de France, it is interesting to see riders at another event. I like the way you have got the 5 narrow shots across the page in one part, amazing to catch all these riders at just the right angle for this type of framing. My favourites are the top one and the long one of the rider in green. Although the subject of each frame is cycling the tabblo doesn't seem boring or repetitive, it's great to be able to put all these shots into an interestly laid oft tabblo.

Thanks for the kind words.

These people take their sport very seriously though from what I've seen any sense of competition doesn't go beyond the race course. Regarding hairless bodies, from what I've read it has nothing to do with streamlining. Apparently it's so muscle massages that are needed after a long race to force out toxins aren't a hair pulling experience. That's the story I read and they seem to be sticking to it. :P Besides, some of the racers do have hair though I guess not in this series of images.

I processed these images (except for the last one) on a second setup I have so as not to bog down my Internet computer. Unfortunately, though I thought they were well matched in terms of color calibration, the images look a little too dark and contrasty. There's no way to avoid doing things the slowest way I guess.

Looks as though you like to be where the action is! Great shots! And thanks for your tour of a time trial. I have never been to one. Appreciate your work!

The cyclist at the top has a large surgical scar. I checked the full set of images that I have and she is still in the race later but with a different rear wheel. I wonder if she was allowed a restart or lost all that time in riding a flat and changing the wheel.

Great action shots. Great layout. I got a kick out of the pic of the rider with his tongue hanging out. I was also intrigued by all the different kinds of helmets. Quite a wide range of shapes and styles.

This is a fantastic Tabblo. You've captured a whole gamut of expressions and emotions. I really enjoyed this.

Thanks again everyone for the generous comments. The rider with his tongue out as if he were a member of KISS was very strange to see. That wasn't a momentary capture. He road like that almost continuously though his tongue is retracted in a later picture in the tabblo.

Thanks for bringing us where the action is. Awesome! I really love your panning shots.

This is a serious Tabblo befitting this serious event. Wow, latent..just excellent. I really like the way you arrange the photos..some facing each other, others overlapping and going diagonally down. Really gives the feeling of frenzy and excitement. Yes a marked diference in the last photo..posture, expression..all are just really fine photographs, too

Viqi, thanks for the kind comment. I've described my approach to a tabblo like this one in comments in another tabblo of mine, Manhattan on the Hudson - III.

http://www.tabblo.com/studio/stories/view/274147/

Basically I use "manual" mode in the layout menu of the floating menu on the right of a tabblo build screen. Along with manual mode I choose the fine grid, which allows almost free form placement of images. I also select beforehand the "Borderless 6 col" layout, which is wider than all the others.
