Zhujiajiao - Venice of the East

With a history dating back 1700 years, Zhujiajiao is a well-preserved ancient town interconnected by canals and bridges. It is located in the western suburbs of Shanghai, around 80 kilometres from its centre.

People whose ancestors settled in this town hundreds of years ago are still living there.

Boats used to be the dominant mode of transportation, not only within the town but with other towns as well.

Time seems to have come to a standstill in this idyllic town.

Though the arrival of tourists has increased Zhujiajiao's fame, it has also converted many of its houses into restaurants, souvenir stores and guest inns.

"Veranda Bridge" - the only wooden bridge and in my eyes, the most beautiful one in the town.

This is the guy who rowed our boat.

Narrow alleys thronged with tourists, shopkeepers and all kinds of items that fill up the tourists' luggages as souvenirs.

A peep through the open window gives us a glimpse of the elderly's favourite pastime - mahjong.

The tallest building is the local temple.

Wow, thank you for sharing these great pictures and the local everyday life they depict! Somehow, the 'Venice of the East' seems so much nicer than touristy and seriously overpriced "real" Venice.

What a beautiful place! I really like that there is just enough color in these pictures to keep things interesting. A lovely tabblo and a great tour of a place I had no idea existed. Thanks!

Thank you all for your comments! There are actually several such towns in South-eastern China but this is the only one I have been to. It's better to visit the town during off-peak seasons when there are not many tourists.
