The Elephant and Donkey in the Food Court at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center are from a citywide public arts exhibit from several years ago called “Party Animals”. This playful title refers to the two major political parties in the USA. As you may know the Elephant has been used as a symbol of the Republican party and the Donkey for the Democratic party. The two pieces on display at the Reagan Building are the Washington “Monuphant” ,depicting stoneworkers who have worked on DC’s monuments, and the Donkey depicts the images of many important African Americans in history- most prominently, Frederick Douglas, Supreme Court Justice Marshall, Martin Luther King Jr., and Harriet Tubman who was instrumental in the “underground railroad”. "Party Animals" is a terrific arts project that celebrates the talent and creativity of Washington-area artists and two symbols of our nation's democracy.
