Shorebirds - Chaplin, SK

American Avocets

So many people think of Saskatchewan as a bland featureless plain. While, parts of it are indeed flat and arrid farmland, other parts are vibrant landscapes that tease the senses with a myriad of lifeforms.

In Chaplin Saskatchewan you can find a stunning variety of marsh-birds, including the endangered

piping plover. I caught a Killdeer and a pair of

American Avocets in winter plumage.

There are also a couple of buff birds I was unable to identify. Perhaps immature Willets, or Dowitchers?

I was several hundred feet behind a fence trying to shoot these elusive birds.
I shot these at full telephoto (400+ mm) but was longing for a converter to bring these birds closer.

The CHAPLIN/OLD WIVES/REED LAKES area is the first hemispheric shorebird reserve in Western Canada.

You're right. I would never have thought of Saskatchewan when looking at these pics. My first thought was the low country of the Carolinas or something near Savannah, Ga. Lovely!

Wow; you've got a great telephoto! I was going to say something about how hard it is to get close enough to these birds to get a good shot, but the shots here prove just how much better you can do with good equipment! Great shots; better than I'd see if I was there in person! :)

Great pictures! We are going on an Alaskan cruise next Friday. I cannot wait! The cruise is going to be fun, I'm sure, but I cannot wait to take pictures!!!
