Ophelia (Shawndy)

This is sort of an "Ophelia" idea (reference: Hamlet) I had that Shawndy was happy to take part in during a fun "Trash the Dress" shoot recently. These photos aren't touched up yet, although I did push colors towards the green a bit.

I used a Fuji S3 Pro dSLR with Nikkor 50mm f1.8, a Holga medium-format and Graflex Speed Graphic large-format camera on Polaroid type 55. The LF was especially fun (sarcasm) trying to keep her eyes open while I focused and loaded the film to snap the shot when the waves did what I wanted.

Wonderful photos. I love the last photo and I like it in B&W, but I would also like to see it in color - she is a beautiful model and I bet the colors really stand out with the water rushing up against her. Very, very well done on all of the photos.

Beautiful shots, with great exposure and color. No tech problems that I can see, and this project is going to be evocative and gorgeous however you choose to show it.

Very good pics with great intensity; yes, you changed it a bit to the green, there is a crescent of overdone change round the head in pic one (still no problem, because it has a good effect), and a slight over-exposure in 4 (right). No criticism at all - it's just because you asked for comment. I adore the way you set the theme and congratulations to your Ophelia! Greetings Sigi

Engelgrafik said at 9:32 p.m. on Aug 22, 2007:
well thanks for all the wonderful praise, and I really appreciate all the critique too! It's such a great feeling to know you got a message across, even if it's just a nod to Hamlet or some romantic melodrama.
Engelgrafik said at 9:45 p.m. on Aug 22, 2007:
MEMOTIONS: I actually thought of the old movie version of Shakespeare's Hamlet (not the one from the '90s, the one long before), how they superimpose her image within the water with lilies and seaweed and stuff

STERLINGGRAY: that last shot is Type 55 Polaroid... only comes in b/w unfortunately. I scan it as color though, just to get warm or cool tones.

CHILEODREAM: Yep, Ophelia is definitely "ein Engel" now sadly... (Engel = Angel for those who don't know German)

Jeff..always so facinated by your work and the dialouge you provide. this set is no exception. like how tyou played with the theme and used different formats. so many layers. kudos to Shawndy, too.

Hey Jeff,

You really captured a very unique part of the Trash the dress experience. I don't think I've seen anything like this from anyone else. Congratulations on your creativity in creating some beautiful work! I also think Shawndee should get some recognition on her willingness to colaborate and get down and dirty for you. The look on her face really lends itself to a romantic feel. I look forward to seeing the final worked images. I'm sure they will have that extra "polished" feel to them.

Jeff, it takes courage and determination to execute on an idea like this. Then it takes talent to get great images from the shoot. You clearly have all three skills! I love the second shot the most, and also the one of the back of the dress surrounded by all the dark water.
