Gray's and Torrey's

Gray's Peak and Torrey's Peak are side by side 14,000 foot mountains east of the Eisenhower Tunnel and just south of I-70.   The trail is an exhausting but well maintained 10 mile loop.  Allow 5-7 hours for the venture.

Below:  Our group tramps up the flanks in the early morning hours.

Farther Below:   A mountain goat grazes in the midst of the rocky scree near the top.    A helicopter made numerous passes as if inspecting the terrain or on a search mission.

Reaching the peak of Gray's demanded some sort of celebration.   The obligatory traditional Hoesley Headstand was implemented.

Left:   A view of Torrey's Peak to the northwest of Gray's.

Below:  Difficult to see through the haze is Lake Dillon and Frisco, Colorado just west of Gray's Peak.

At Left:  Hazy view of Quandary Peak, another 14-ner that lies at the south end of the Ten Mile Range.

Below:  The three ladies charging up the final switchbacks near the summit of Gray's.

At right:   Our group photo all happily and safely on the peak!

Below:  Feeling good with no altitude problems on her second 14-ner!

Sweeping scree fields drape the valley floor far below and to the north as we push on to the saddle linked to Torrey's Peak.

A much needed rest, lunch, and water at the summit of Torrey's

Below:   Our "lost" buddy Jim, who out-distanced us on the ascent and bagged the peaks in the order reversed of ours.

At right:  Click to enlarge.  View of the well defined trail leading northward to the parking lot/trail head.

Below: A-Basin Ski Resort just over the first ridge and right side of photo.  Keystone is centered on the next ridge back.

Below:  Switchbacking trails on the north face of Gray's.   These trails get a lot of use due to their proximity to I-70 and the accessibility of the Front Range to Denver.

The end of the trail brings thoughts of rest, cold beverages, and maybe a soothing soak in a hot tub.

Looks like a great climb. I can see the basis for your new icon image. I guess the last picture is a look back with the thought "we were up there."

Great photos of this hike! How nice it must be to do two 14ers in one loop.

Great shot! Looks like everyone had a great time. And the views alone had to make climb worth it.
