I did it on a PC, but there's no reason it wouldn't work on the Mac version of Photoshop

Well, if you can't afford photoshop, you can get gimpshop (http://gimpshopdotnet.blogspot.com/)

It's free, and has much of the same functionality. I've never used it (I used the GIMP sometimes. Same program, but photoshop tutorials are pretty much useless with it because everything is layed out differently. Not so with Gimpshop which is designed to be as close to Photoshop as possible.)
