shortcake

I had found some lovely berries at the store the other night and that started wonderful thoughts of my mother's strawberry shortcake. It was the closest thing to heaven, save her apple pie, but that is another tabblo!

My first attempt came out looking eh. But tasted like metallic cardboard. At least the berries were yummy.

After consulting with some experts (Mom and a sister) I decided to try again. This round was edible but not near Mom's. Shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath. =(

Fannie Farmer has the recipe. I doubled the butter and used a third cup sugar.

I used only half a cup of milk to keep from getting too sticky.  And tried not to work the dough too much.

It seemed to brown better than the night before and smelled great. Still, just doesn't look right to me.

This one was easier to split and the top held together for a bit longer.  The inside was moist and the edges were crumbly and delicate.  All in all, not really bad, just not what my taste buds had on their minds.
